ALPHA DOG: COLIN HURLEY, QB, JACKSONVILLE (FLA.) TRINITY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY, LSU COMMIT
It was a surprisingly strong group of quarterbacks on Sunday and Hurley had the best day of the bunch. Not only did he win the event’s accuracy challenge by hitting four of five stationary targets, but he was also selected by the coaches working the camp as one of the co-MVPs for the quarterbacks. This was the third time we have seen Hurley in some type of setting over the past two months and it was definitely his most encouraging outing as he was sharp and didn’t make too many mistakes. We have noted in the past that Hurley doesn’t struggle to put pace on the ball and that’s still the case. He also showed during 1-on-1s that he’s not afraid to challenge tight coverage windows. We’re eager to see what Hurley, who reclassified back in November from the class of 2025 to the class of 2024, can do as a senior after completing just under 54 percent of his passes this past fall. If he can cut down on the interceptions and improve his decision making under pressure, he’s going to have a chance to win games at the Power Five level.

Still have never seen another player move from 5-star range to 3-star in 1 update, even if it was after a reclass.
Something tells me he's not ending up a 3-star

Yep, I think it’s safe to say his ranking will make a significant jump. He should get an invite to elite 11 this summer and stand out.

Is this kid still 15 years old? Really impressive how he's competing in camps

Very bizarre. And one of many reasons I honestly don’t worry about what those recruiting services say about a prospect. Look at the offers. More times than not that’ll tell you a lot about a kids potential.
Hurley, for example, has been heavily recruited by every blue blood cfb program in America. As you said he was considered the top qb or close to it in the 2025 class, he reclassified and all of a sudden he’s a marginal prospect? Come on with all these concerns.
Meanwhile all he’s done since then is go to these camps and show he’s among the best of the group.
Nothing has changed. He’s an elite QB.

Not sure how rankings work and it does seem weird for him to be high for 2025 and not for 2024, but you have to be honest that completion % is a concern. I have seen people try to obfuscate that stat to their advantage for many QB's, talking about talent around him etc., but it is the number 1 most translatable stat from level to level. You want to see your QB having a 65% completion percentage ideally.

It'll be interesting to see how he does with comp. % next Fall. I'd bet it will go way up...

If his completion % goes to 65% or higher this year and he has 5-8 picks, he should be a top 50 overall player.

He had a birthday recently.
So 16?

I believe Caleb Williams completed like 54% of his passes his junior or senior year if I remember correctly

I think his fall in rankings has alot to do with older kids in the 2024 class have more tape and statistics compared to Hurley. Top notch qb's can show lots of improvement in one year and it shows in their high school stats. Also remember Hurley got hurt so I bet if he plays a full season this year he will be either a high 4 star or 5 star before he makes it to Baton Rouge. Glad he is a tiger.

Rankings are about projection. He was ranked highly compared against '25 kids where he is more advanced(he's had elite coaching they say) and ahead in experience in most cases. Also as a '25 kid he'd still have 2 years of development left. More projection.
Reclassifying changed all of that. Suddenly he's being compared to kids with as much or more tape, comparable skill advancement with 1 less year of development to improve, meaning less projection. Couple that with a relatively short stature, less than elite athleticism and poor accuracy in games. His ranking makes complete sense to me. At least the rationale behind it.
