I would guess they are a bit too busy to valet them to you. Bring the dog, maybe they'll feel sorry for you and give you extra ones.

I've seen pictures of a couple of fallen trees on campus, nothing else though

Probably so! I'm staying with a friend, and a huge plus is the dogs have each other!
