What ratio are y’all using? Randy Lemon recommends a 3-1-2, but I wanted to see what everyone else is using.

I think that’s a good fertilizer but it’s pretty expensive buying on amazon, Doc has to get his.

Right now. 19-0-5. My tif is breaking dormancy. In two weeks I’ll do 33-3-6. 4 weeks later I’ll do it again. Then the drought season starts in north Texas so I’ll do 33-3-6 50% slow release. When I do my first 33-3-6 I’ll do top choice at 2lbs per 1,000. I’ll also do merit mid april for grubs.

You're right. My yard guy(chemicals) will put down a 13-13-13 next month and then I'll start with the PGF complete following. I have Celebration Bermuda(switching to it from centipede) so I can fertilize heavy.

Lot of meaningless numbers being thrown around in this thread to me lol. How does one new to lawn care know which one to put down?

The first number is nitrogen, the second number is phosphorus, and the third number is potassium. The numbers are the percent of NPK that is in the bag. Different grass types require different amounts of N. Centipede being the lowest then St Aug and then bermuda. Nitrogen in the warm months and potassium in the winter months. You can pull a soil sample and have it tested to check your NPK and ph levels if you would like.

Everyone will like their own mix. Mine is 16-0-8 for centipede, 25-3-5 for St Aug, and 33-3-6 for bermuda. In the winter they all get 0-0-62

If you aren’t sure what the numbers are just put down Milorganite. It’s fool proof. But I would wait until the grass greens up and temps warm up

Where do you all go for the fertilizer? I feel like the home depot's and Lowe's have very little options

I also purchase at Site One Landscape Supply, i use their LESCO 24–2-11 Polycoat on my St Aug backyard and LESCO 15-5-15 or the 24-2-11 for centipede front yard, adjusting the application rate since the nitrogen requirements differ for the 2 grasses.

Prior to that, I used Fertilome lawn fertilizers that are carried by retail plant nurseries and some hardware stores in my area - good products, a good bit more expensive than the equivalent/near equivalent LESCO products.

To the OP, I’ve never seen lawn fertilizer sold in a 3-1-2 ratio, vegetable/landscape fertilizers yes, but not lawn, although the LESCO 15-5-15 comes close. A lawn fertilizer with that ratio in many cases would provide much more phosphorus than recommended by southern land grant universities, while trying to meet the recommended nitrogen requirement. Excessive phosphorus application on a lawn will sequester iron potentially leading to chloritic (yellowing) lawn over time. A high phosphorus application to lawn grasses should ideally be based on results of a soil test analysis which shows the soil to be deficient in phosphorus.

Randy Lemon (according to his bio) started out as a ag communications specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service (Texas A&M) and although communications specialist are generally journalists by trade, in my experience they are knowledgeable as their job is to distill and extend ag information generated by researchers to the general public on a daily basis. I’m sure much of Randy Lemon’s recommendations are based from information generated by consumer horticultural researchers and extension specialists at Texas A&M - Lemmon is based out of Houston.

I buy the PGF complete off of Amazon. I try to use the little guys mostly if I'm not using PGF.

Home Depot and Lowes do not have much of a selection and I need to go there for a few other things so hoping to get fertilizer while I am there. They have milorganite and Scotts Southern Lawn Food (32-0-10). Should I go with one of these or trek elsewhere/amazon for something closer to a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 recommendation? For reference I have St. Aug and am in S. Louisiana.

Where is this? I am local and I am over paying PFG Complete prices. For a 3000 sqft yard it isn't bad but I have a full acre lot.

Crawdude how much are you paying for that at Site One? I’m heading to an area this Thursday that has it in stock.

I’m trying simple lawn solutions 16-4-8 this weekend then rolling with carbon x after that since I have it already.
