re: Which fertilizer right now?

Well if you have a sufficient supply of the LESCO 24-2-11 certainly use that if you can return the 15-5-10 - the LESCO 24-2-11 you would apply at 4 lbs per 1000 sq ft to provide you with the 1 pound of N per 1000 sq ft. But when you get a chance do get a soil analysis done on your yard - good base base line info to have on file should you need it, and should you have any soil fertility issues that need to be addressed they will be identified.

How does one pull a soil sample and have it analyzed by the AgCenter? Also, how do yall accurately figure out while spreading the 1000 sqft and 6 3/4 lbs? How do you know the right pace or do you basically figure out a 1000 sq ft area and run the spreader until you are out then move to the next area.

It depends on the spreader. I use a lesco 80# spreader. Spreader set on 14 with a walking speed of 3.2mph. It comes with a key to calibrate the spreader every now and then.

Soil Samples - check with retail plant nurseries in your area to see if they have seem at their store, or alternatively stop by the parish extension office and they will have them LINK (may need to call first, I don’t know how the AgCenter is handling parish extension offices openings with corona. Here’s a list of those that have the boxes I just found . LINK
The pre-addressed postage paid boxes mailing boxes are free, each have 3 bags for soil samples, and instruction will be in each box on how collect sample the samples from your lawn, garden, landscape beds, .... LINK $10 per soil sample (max 3 samples per box) plus $5 for postage.
Setting on spreader - usually the bag of fertilizer will have some instruction or the instructions that come with the spreader, but I’ve found it’s trial and error. Put on a lower setting initially and keep going going over the area in difference directions to you dispense it all. You can adjust the setting appropriately from there to where hopefully you can dispense it all in 2 passes just to save time. Ideally you want to make at least 2 passes over the same area perpendicular (right angles) to each other. Example, my St Aug backyard is 4500 sq ft, 18 pounds of 24-2-11 in the hopper, and 2 passes, through yard, one east-west, one north-south.
Now the really Important part (seriously) write down the setting on your spreader for future reference for each type of granular lawn product you use. Every product has a different granule size and the setting you use for a LESCO fertilizer will not likely be the same for a Scott’s product, or pre-emergenent, or lime or sulfur, fungicide, etc. I keep a cheat sheet on this with my rotary spreader manual.
Keep this around for reference - it’s 12 years old, and hopefully they can get around to updating it soon. Louisiana Lawn Best Management Practices

Folks, is there any hope for my back yard?
Just moved in a few months ago...yard was clearly neglected, possibly two years of leaf build up.
LOTS of trees and shade, but I think it should get enough sun for grass to grow.
What should I do??

That is exactly what a lawn looks like that get take all root rot and the homeowner does nothing about it. Top dress with peat moss, get your ph tested, and then resod.

Resod my arse! How much that cost?!
Might rather plant herbs a over!

How many square feet are dealing with that looks like that. Are the dead areas in heavy shade and do they have a tendency to stay wet from poor drainage? Where are you located?
Here are are a couple articles on the Take All Root Rot ronk is referring to. LINK. LINK

I said it looks like the result of root rot. It might not be. Could be shade and neglect. I was just saying if you wanted to resod it would be something to consider.
If you are in it for the long run then I would put down the peat moss and see what happens.

Mostly the whole back yard is crap. There’s what appears to be forms of monkey grass scattered around as well. Upwards of 3,000 ft
Heavy shade? It will be
Wet areas? Hell yeah
Location? Baton Rouge

Well give me some ideas and I'll try them

St Aug can recover and spread very easily in a lawn treated with peat moss. You might get it to start to spread.

Wait. What’s the question?
Posted on 3/19/20 at 4:31 am to ronk
You said you wish you had a zoysia yard that someone let you experiment with. There’s really not a ton of literature out there on zoysia like there is with Bermuda or St. Aug.

How much peat moss we talking about?
Heavy or a light dressing?

What is your current schedule for the lawn. Have you done anything this year?
Posted on 3/19/20 at 9:52 am to ronk
I put some prodiamine down in mid Feb but no fertilizer yet. It’s about 75% green right now. I scalped it down to about 1.25 with my rotary mower and it’s looking ok.
