I have a Honda HRN with dual blades. I purchased it new in 2020 and have loved it. Recently I’ve noticed a few pesky blades of grass don’t get cut on each pass.

This is mainly in my backyard, which, to be fair, has become a hodgepodge of different types of grass. It’s mostly st. Aug and centipede, with some clover and crab grass in different spots that I’m treating. My front yard is entirely centipede and it’s cuts it like butter.

Anyway, just wondering if after 2 years I should sharpen the blades… it just seems that mowing the backyard is more difficult than ever before and it’s not cutting everything as even as it once did. I’ve started mowing every 5-6 days to compensate, but I’ve never had to do that in the past.

Thanks in advance.

I have never thought about sharpening the blades. I buy new blades, plug and filter every other season.

I always sharpened mid summer. Sharp blades, clean oil/filter, and a mower will last considerably longer.

Have you thought about visually inspecting the blades?

I keep two sets of blades and sharpen/rotate them out after 5 cuts. I have 4 acres so I'm cutting a decent amount of grass. Depending on how much you cut, you can probably go the season without sharpening. I would definitely start the season with a new or freshly sharpened set though.

I bought a second set of blades. I swap them out about every month and sharpen the set that's off. My brother has a sharpening guide that makes it nearly impossible for me to screw it up.

If your blades have lasted 2 years I'd just go buy a replacement set at Lowe's. It's $30. ETA: $33 now. Thanks, Obama.

Those Honda blades are cheap, I use to just buy new ones once a year. They were cheaper than paying someone to sharpen them.

Can I thread hijack a little bit? I bought this same mower last year and one thing that really irks me that I’m wondering if any others have this problem. When I cut my grass against the grain, the mower will basically not cut any grass on the last 2-4 inches on the right side. The grass can be super short and it will still miss it/not cut it

Thank you, everybody. Blades do seem dull and have a few spots where they’ve taken a beating from roots and random kids toys left in the lawn ????? Seems like buying a new set is the best option.

Mine has been doing this recently as well. I was contributing that to my blade issue

Pretty sure there’s no ‘against the grain’. I cut my grass in the 4 different directions and I don’t notice any difference. But I’d guess you have a dull or broken blade?

OP, most people will recommend ‘sharpening’ the blades 2-3 times a year for best performance. I rarely do more than once a year. Sharpening is very easy and mower blades aren’t ‘sharp’ they are are like a butter knife.

For an average homes yard I would think you could sharpen/change once per season and that should suffice.

I think it is somewhere in the 20-30 hour range. The manual should say.

I personally sharpen my blades about every 15 hours.

Purchased the Honda blade from Lowes this morning, as well as new spark plug, oil, and air filter. Replaced everything and changed the oil… cuts like a dream again!

Thanks everybody!

I like the idea of a second set. I would think that for the avg homeowner if you had a second set you could change them mid summer and then sharpen both in the winter, rinse and repeat.
