What is the point of a pergola?

Like, one can't decide if they want to be in the shade or not?

a Pergola is what you call your unfinished gazebo

We have one. Let's just say it wasn't my decision.

Personally, I've never understood the reason for them. Top open so it offers little to no shade and if it rains, your arse is getting wet.
I see pics of some with outdoor furniture on the slab the pergola is built on and a good rain will make that stuff unusable for quite a while as it dries out, especially seating with cushions.
Just build an arbor and plant climbing plants around it so it fills in and offers shade. I built a big arbor for a friend several years ago and they planted wisteria around it and it has taken over the thing with lots of shade.

I had one that I covered with clear fiberglass panels. It seemed like a good idea at the time to have some covered space while also allowing light in. It did the job of keeping everything underneath dry for the most part, but it also had a greenhouse effect where it made it pretty hot underneath.
Rebuilt with an aluminum patio cover and that was way better.

Purely decorative….if you want practicality, erect a frame with a tin roof.

It’s a place to hang plants, lights, fans and stuff.

I thought about a pergola until someone said birds like to sit and crap on them all day.

Until you're under there and you have bug, plant material and everything else falling in your food.
