What could be done to improve outside aesthetics of this MCM house? (Cedar shake facade)

I believe this is cedar shake siding, correct? Is there anything that you could do to improve the curb appeal of this house’s facade? Perhaps more neutral colours (brown / tan)? Perhaps stain the cedar shingles a different hue (I was thinking a dark dark gray and then make the board and batten that hip dark grey with black accents and the bright coloured orange door).
I really like the inside but do not like the outside at all. It seems like it would be a ton of work or cost a ton to stand that real thick cedar wood shake

For one, I would paint/stain the lower garage level a darker color that complements the landscape a bit better and grounds it a bit. As it stands, it looks a bit off balance to me.

Thanks for the responses - is this what you have in mind? I kind of sketched it out here. I agree it looks better than the diagonal but to do this on all 4 sides of the house would cost a fortune I assume? How would you match up the new shingles with the old? You'd have to reshingle the entire thing I reckon? Wouldn't this be tens of thousands of dollars?
Or do you mean that these cantilevered aesthetics are purely that - that it's not functional space (I haven't toured the house personally) and you'd actually remove much of that angle and you'd be "slimming it out" and tearing out some of the bulk (basically the opposite of what my first paragraph said and the opposite of what I drew below)?

Yeah agree I'd go with a brown / dark dark brown with accent color or a black / dark dark Grey with an accent color like you see here... kind of clichéd in these parts by now with the black but maybe browns is a bit more traditional with the same look

What about refacing that concrete wall and putting some big MCM house numbers on the new facade of it like below...

With that slope, it looks like that garage may get a shite pile of water inside.

Lipstick on a pig, leave it as is. Sorry baw.

So is this cantilevered space likely just decorative and could it be "lopped off" and replaced with a more current style of cladding (concrete or cedar boards) to create a facade that looks more like this than the awkward cantilever? It would actually be a really attractive house if it was just a graceful box with updated materials rather than the awful sloped facade.

How much are you willing to spend? The higher the budget the more that can be done.

i'd change the color of the trim first and the garage doors. That would make a huge impact for a small cost

Stone façade the lower 1/3 of the main level and the wood post. I would play around with browns and grays for the balance of the home. I might even look at a poplar bark siding for the portions of the upper level that isn't cedar shake. Or replace the 4 small windows with a larger one?

The darker batten color (and of course roof lines) contribute to a German feel. I think the ideas of squaring it off would have the biggest impact. Probably pretty pricy. I'd homogenize the wall color since there is already a lot going on in terms of features/depths.

no matter what you do it will always look like a cheap apt building
only way to change that is to rebuild it from scratch with a completely new design so it looks like a home vs an apt bldg

If you don't want to remove any framing you might be able to scab onto the mansard framing to square it off as others have suggested.
Otherwise I'd assume all of the mansard framing is hing from the structure and not part of it. Possibly with exception of the top joists.

LOL. I was just going to say that. It looks like so many of the apartment buildings here in B'ham that I've been on looking at their shitty roofs. All built in the 60's - 70's, 1/2" plywood deck, HVAC's on the roof, been recovered three times, etc. You can see the front of the house has downspouts coming down from within that mansard. That's a beotch to deal with once that downspout rusts out or clogs up within that mansard. I'd slope the roof to the back and get rid of the downspouts on the front of the house. But it's still gonna look dated.
