What are your thoughts on retractable awnings for shade for a patio?

I always thought they screamed "old people" but they make some more modern looking ones that hide away discreetly.

Anyone here ever install one at their house? What are your thoughts on them?

All these TD Premium memberships paying for the Chicken Coup upgrades

Share photos of what you want. It doesn't sound too hard. Just need to attach to studs I'm guessing.

I will probably do a DIY shade sail, but wanted to explore all my options...

I helped build a pergola with a retractable shade. Turned out really nice. The bigger the pergola the better if you can do that as an option.

Mom and Dad looked into them for the house in HSV, AR as they had a western deck. They decided that even shaded it would still be too hot about half the year.

With the strong storms that blow through too the elevated repair costs were the final nail in the coffin for the idea.

They ended up with a set of roll up split bamboo shades similar to window blinds mounted to the door frames (2 sets of sliding glass doors as the deck runs the length of the house). Did help keep the house cooler though.

I have a SunSetter awning on my patio and it works great. I also have an awning on my travel trailer.

I have a pretty big offsetting cantilever patio umbrella that creates a nice shaded area on the patio

Always wondered what these things are made of. Seems like they would rot in a damp climate.

I'm considering the same thing.

They last a long time, but if you have to replace it, the canvas is much cheaper than the mechanism.

Parents had a Sun Setter on the back patio in the early 2000's. Was a PITA to put up but once we did, it was nice. It was easy to set up and retract so when the afternoon storms rolled through it was easy to put away.

What direction does the area you're putting it over face? If it's west, those retractable shades dont' really buy you any meaningful time out of the sun. They do now have apps that control them so that if you forget to retract them and a storm is coming, they'll automatically collapse.

Most things like that are made with Sunbrella or an equivalent. The awning and cover material is essentially the same as they make for marine tops and covers.
