We have a rain soft. It's ok, I guess.

Check home depot online. They have whole house softeners. Go with a 64,000 grain system.

we're replacing one that was put in by previous homeowner (from Lowe's or HD) because the part that failed can't be repaired/replaced

going with a Clack (made in USA) and will be installed/warrantied by a local company... it's more expensive than the big box stores but I'd rather something made here that can actually be repaired

Clack without a doubt! If you are at least a little handy
you can do your own maintenance. You can view videos to help you!

The Clack website says they're a component manufacturer and don't make turnkey water softeners.

Can anyone recommend a different water softener manufacturer?

you have tankless water heaters? If not, be sure to replace anode rod at least every 2 years because the softener salt will eat them up.

We've got a tankless water heater that requires frequent descaling and repairs because of very hard water.

============

ETA: a local plumber insists that a high-quality sediment filter with a 4-1/2" x 10" element - installed at the inlet of a tankless water heater - works better than a water softener to prevent very hard water from plugging up the unit.

Has anyone tried this?

I have a RainSoft as well. Works great for a water softener. I can only get the replacement water filters from the RainSoft distributor. I need to have my RO/filter unit serviced. I am thinking it will be expensive.

Do you know how deep your well goes and how many feet of water are on top of your wellhead? If the well isnt deep enough you’ll occasionally have a sulfur smell to your water. There is another tank in addition to your softener that can help bleed off that sulfur. I forget the name of the tank but it has an aeration effect where it sprays water into the tank and mixes water with air. I wouldn’t do it until you determine if you have this but just a heads up it’s not anything harmful. It just smells like rotten eggs.

I’ll second the comment about buying an all in one unit from Home Depot. Had one at my previous house and once one part goes out, you can’t replace the individual parts. The entire unit has to be replaced.
