I need to do a good trim this year. Medium sized trees but have to for home owners insurance.

We have them at the entrance to our subdivision. The landscape company just did them yesterday.

Selectively prune branches, don't crape murder them.

Ive seen it spelled crape and crepe in horticultural books and both are considered correct. I spell it Crape.

IMO, they should be trimmed before the new growth starts. New growth can start as early as mid Feb. if the temperatures have been above 60 F for a few days.

If you are having to trim a tree to appease your homeowner’s insurance policy, then obviously it was planted to close to the house. Trimming it will result in a lower branching pattern, more likely to rub on your house. Just cut it down, and put another in a better spot.

Yeah that makes sense. These are not moveable though. They have been there at least 20 years. Just keeping them the same size they have been for years. Was really wondering about the timing more as I had seen a neighbor doing his the other day.

Any time after the leaves fall, and before they sprout.

Hijack/add-on question - what are these things growing on my crepe myrtles?

These two trees aren't in the best of shape (neighbor's myrtles 25 ft away look great). Guess I'm really looking for justification to get rid of them.
