so I’m wanting to cover my popcorn ceilings instead of trying to get it off. Ceiling peak is 32’ and it’s a 10/12 pitch…too big of a hassle.

any thoughts on using mdf 1/4s to cover it? I was thinking the pre-primed stuff would be easier on the painter and I’d be assured the boards would be straight and flush.

once you get up about 16’ or so you can’t really see up there anyway without the upstairs lights on. Any obvious downsides?

Would be wavy as hell I'd imagine and probably a pain to install. Probably be less work to just pay them to rip out the drywall and replace

believe me that was option A…but getting new drywall up would be a massive undertaking, plus all the finish and sanding. The advantage to the 4” boards is they can be cut on the floor as needed and handed up. Should be the easiest install of several not great options, as they would only need to be touched once.

Will be wavy and look terrible. You will have noticeable lines. Flat paint shows the smallest imperfections.

Pay someone to scrape the ceiling and float if needed. Then paint.

Why not cover with 1/4” dry wall? Would be much easier and look much better than mdf.

Don't overthink this.

Scrape and finish the existing ceiling. The popcorn aggregate will not allow for a good fit against the ceiling.

I thought that you were a contractor?

Does popcorn that high up really bother you that much?

this sounds like a hairbrained plan that you will regret less than 1/8th of the way through lol

Why not just tongue and groove ceiling?

i am, just not residential and certainly not popcorn ceilings.
the idea is to give it a wood look, not painted gyp...so i want to see the joints/etc.

i could just use dimensional lumber but it wont be straight and probably will be cupped. just trying to make install a little easier

The good news is you will probably knock all of the popcorn off installing stuff over it. Then you can uninstall it and have a popcorn free ceiling.

It's brilliant.

@ 32', this is not reality. Lots of scaffold and a solid deck.

I would scrape the ceiling no matter what. That way whatever you choose to install has a chance of lying flat.

Do you know Ross(RIP)?

Could also do a shiplap ceiling.

maybe I didn’t explain it clearly but that’s exactly what I want to do. Using mdf instead of lumber

To the poster above Ross was my cousin

Ive done shiplap ceilings but to keep it flush and straight i would put runners about 16" apart to nail the shiplap to. Atleast thats what i did using pine not mdf. Turned out good.

Ross and I went to school together. He was a couple years older than I. He was friends with my cousin.

I got to know Ross through another “Grand”, spear fishing and nutria hunting (sorry for the hijack - good luck with the ceiling)

Sheetrock guys routinely scrape popcorn off. They can sand and spray texture and make it look good. You will have the mess but that can be cleaned.
If you want wood consider v-groove pine that you finish on the ground and then just cut to size and finish nail it up on 1x4 strips. Just did one where the boards were beat up a bit then torched, stained and slightly white-washed. Beautiful look. Whatever finish you like it’s reasonably priced and covers the popcorn without having to remove it.
