No.

Based on your calculations a pool would lose between 8 and 15" of water a month.

It hasn't rained in weeks here and the waterline is still in the middle of my strainer opening so we're talking maybe an inch or less.

You are lucky then and aren’t you in Nashville? How much of your pool is in the sun and how long each day? A couple inches a month would not be abnormal. But as said it’s hard to tell because of rain.

Needless to say though, the Op certainly has a leak.

I had a leak in the face plate of my skimmer. Knew I had a leak because of water levels dropping like you, used dye to find it, then called local pool service to come and patch the area. I thought they'd so something fancier, but they just used underwater setting putty. So worth a shot trying that yourself if you can spot the leak.

In the Summer months I can lose up to 1/4 inch per day (I'm just guessing, not exact), much moreso than in other months.

Dude, 1/2" loss is average per week, with no rain and weekend use in the summertime, in an in ground pool. If OP is losing 3" to 4" per week, check calcium levels first, get that in balance, for water loss through walls of pool. After that is corrected, hopefully your water loss has reduced, and if still leaking, OP should check skimmer and light locations for leaks. After that, call out a pro.

Not my calculation chief.

It is a basic rule of thumb for all still waters and that includes swimming pools.

If this is true you have a issue with water intrusion and need to get it addressed quickly before your walls buckle.

Or perhaps the pool boy is stopping by more often than you think and keeping everything full.

Case report:
We just returned home from a week long trip yesterday. I made sure everything was optimized right before we left and specifically filled waterline to a certain level (with intent to see how much evaporation occurred while we were gone).

It dropped right up to 3 inches (in 1 week) while we gone. It was a very hot week and zero rain.

I don’t have a leak. This occurs unfailingly in hot summer months only. Does not occur in other seasons (or it is much less conspicuous).

1/4 to 1/2 inch evaporation can absolutely occur in a given day.

Edit... I went outside to actually measure ... it’s right at 2 1/4 inches over 8 day total period.

But not to detract from the OP’s initial question... 3 inches in a day is not normal and is certainly worrisome for a leak.

ok full disclosure:

- i'm in nashville (technically franklin)
- pool is built into the side of a heavily wooded hill so only gets full sunlight about 6 hours a day
- weather here is probably milder than baton rouge; we have wind almost constantly and the last week the humidity has been down more than normal.

so yes, i am probably outside the norm which is why i don't see as much water loss.

I'm in Mandeville and my gunite pool loses a couple inches a week.

It depends on temperature and wind.

Easy way to see if you have a leak is to fill a 5 gallon bucket with water and put it next to the pool. Measure the evaporation in the bucket vs the pool. If they are the same, no problem, if the pool is more than the bucket you may have a leak.

That’s interesting. My hot tub does the same thing, and I also suspect that I have a leak. Would like to know what the pro says.

Gunite pool. The walk of our spa cracked. Could see it. The spa had to be rebuilt up. We resurfaced the pool and had it done then.

Now whenever the filter pump shuts off the hot tub drains down super low (below the seats). I have been told this is likely a bad check valve so I am hoping it is an easy fix.

Have you looked there for your leak? Could be where your leak is also, the water is draining to the leak level?

Seems like I once read where lakes, ponds can lose 1/4 inch a day. Not sure how that affects pools but would think easily a few inches a month in the summer.
