TV Mount Above Fireplace

I have never mounted a tv above a fireplace before but after watching some videos I gave it a shot. I used my stud finder to mark the studs as usual, however, I drilled three holes where there should have been studs only to have my drill bit go directly through the drywall. Any idea what’s going on? Do fireplaces have the Sheetrock set back from the studs for some reason? Just thought this was weird.

If you already got 3 holes and you for sure want to mount it, just keep going until you do hit a stud lol

Studs should be there.
Either you're not zeroing out the unit on drywall to begin with or need another stud finder.

If this is a newer tv, it is light, and the mount doesn’t have much adjustment(ie doesn’t pull more than 6 inches out creating a ton of leverage) stick 6 zip toggles in it and call it a day. I’ve run into a fireplace or 2 with weird framing.
Don’t ever do this on a heavy TV or an articulating mount!!!!!

Try using one of the cheap magnet stud finders.

I’d never trust a TV not in studs, don’t care if it’s light.

Some of them weigh the same as pictures or mirrors that get hung with picture hooks…..contractors use those anchors for diaper changing stations….you need to adapt with the times
