20 acres with ~5 cleared with a pond. Trying to decide tractor vs standard riding mower for versatility

Tractor. 4Wd, diesel, with a bucket.
I would start with that as it will give you the most versatility. If mowing all the cleared land you can get a large belly or finishing mower to run on it. Later, if you decide, you could sell the mower attachment (if you need/want to) and purchase something more efficient for mowing like a zero turn.

FWIW:
Use to live on a small farm. My yard was 4 acres. We bought a JD 955 4WD with a 72" belly mower. It was fine mowing being hydrostat and the diesel engine never struggled with the large belly mower. It was great with a small bush hog, grading work, cleaning cattle barns, and moving stuff. Basically it was great for lighter work and tight spaces as it was easier than messing with our old JD 4440. Never did feel the need to purchase something like a zero turn because I did not have many obstacles to mow around in the yard.

ETA:
Kubota or JD you can not go wrong with.

Buy a 5200 or 5210 JD with a 900 hrs or so for 9k or so. Buy a Bush hog and go to work.

Dam a 20 year old JD is more than some of the new Kubota models. Is it the best tractor ever built?

Yes, or close to it. I’ve had 3. Buy one under $11k. Run it a few years and sell it for close to what you paid. It will run a 6’ bush hog or disc or box blade. Front end loader for one will cost $$$ but will be usable on a 2wd tractor. That’s not the case on smaller compact utility tractors.

Been using tractors like that for 20 years. Been stuck twice where 4wd would have helped. Could have used a front end loader a couple dozen times but someone in the club always had one.

Piss on a little compact tractor. I’ll get more done with mine in a day and I will end up spending 10-20% of what you will over the course of time of ownership.

If you will do a lot of Loader work around the place, I would consider getting a track loader (CTL). You can get a bush hog attachment that could work for a couple cuts a year, then have a cheap mower for short grass/lawn type stuff.

If a standard trans, mitsu diesel, and front loader, they are very hard to beat.

I just wish kubotas had more metal to them. They all feel so damned flimsy these days.

I looked at every manufacturer in Louisiana during the summer of 2019 for what I perceived to be the best value overall for a large frame 25 hp tractor. I looked at the Kubota l2501, mahindra 1526, jd 3025, kioti 2610, Massey Ferguson 25 (Same tractor as mahindra), the ls 3025 (mt225), and the Branson. Overall I liked the kioti the best, but I didn’t have a dealer within 2+ hours of home. The kubota honesty felt the “most solid” I just didn’t like the gas tank over the motor, and the rocker pedal Was uncomfortable to me. The jd was probably the most comfortable tractor but by far the wimpiest. It only has 2 ranges, high and low, and low is too slow for continuous work, and high is too weak to do any real tractoring. I ultimately came down to choosing between the ls 3025 and the mahindra 1526. Spec wise the mahindra has the higher 3pt lift capacity, and better fel lift cap. They are both comparable from a stock feature standpoint. I ultimately ended up with the ls and I’m really happy with it. Even tho they are the same class and hp, the mahindra just felt and operated smaller.

At the end of the day they were all good tractors. You should go put your eyes on every color tractor. I never even thought about an ls until i drove it and it just felt right fit for me. Sit on all of them, operate all of them and see what is the most comfortable to you.

I'm at 25 acres, ~8-9 cleared with a peat bottom pond that fluxes drastically lol. I rock a kubota L2250. I mainly use it for mowing. Being peat based, ground is not as level or smooth as I would hope, so riding mower/0 turn was out for me.

Tore down an old house on my property with it... no front end loader pick up went much slower. I'd love to have a front loader, but it wasn't a necessity when I bought it. I got mine with right under 250 hours for only 2 grand. Some rich MD was offloading because he just bought a zero turn. I just couldn't pass on that price.

FWIW, I have a circa 2012 Bobcat CT335 HST tractor that I absolutely love. Back then Kioti made those tractors with some rumored upgrade to the hydraulic system to meet Bobcats specs. Either way it has been a fantastic tractor. Bobcat is now producing their own and they look real nice. Would at least factor them into the search equation.

Whatever you buy get a Texas Agricultural Permit and shop around over there. Mostly cheaper and no sales tax.

Mississippi is cracking down on the 1.5% sales tax for farm purchases.
I have a Kubota MX5100 with the FEL/4wd. It’s a 2011 that I bought new. I do regular maintenance myself and so far zero problems. I looked at them all as well when shopping and went with Kubota based on dealer support and reputation.
