I have a 2012 Toyota Highlander Limited that is still in great condition with low miles. I had it inspected recently and it passed inspection as usual. I drove home then an hour later I started it to run an errand. When I started it, I noticed that the tire sensor light was on. My question is could the equipment used for the inspection have caused this? How do I get the light to go off?

They just hooked it up to OBD. That didn’t cause your problem. It’s much more likely that you have a low tire due to cold weather.

Fill up your tires. You probably need to check your spare too because those can have TPMS too.

You then need to reset your TPMS. Look on YouTube under your vehicle make and model. But this one should be it.

If they have never been changed the batteries are probably going dead and causing the light to come on. Had to change the ones in my wife car about two years ago. I just turned the TPMS off in my vehicle with my scan tool when it would go off.

Turnblad85 is correct. 12 year old car, your batteries are going out on the sensors and you will need to replace the sensors.

I curse Firestone/Ford for this mess. I don't live in a vehicle inspection state or area, so my lights just stay on once the batteries die. Do you have to have it working to pass Louisiana inspections? I believe there is a tool you can buy, but it's fairly make specific and not cheap to see which one is bad. I considered that just to get rid of it, but balked at spending money I didn't really need to spend.

I'm not sure if they need to be working to pass inspection. I changed the ones in the wife's car just because my buddy is a Toyota mechanic and he did them while he was change the oi and rotating the tires. Plus she can't look at a tire and tell if it's low. Because just last night she gets home and says the tire light is on in my car.

Cold weather always finishes off the older batteries on one or more of mine.

$60/ea at discount tire. Just cheap enough to be below my DIY threshold. Wish they just screwed out with the valve core.

Known issue with most Toyota SUVs. We've had a 2010 Highlander, a 2011 Sequoia, 2013 Highlander, and 2016 Highlander, and all of them pretty much had the TPMS light on all the time. For some reason our Sienna never did that, but all of the different SUVs did.

There is a reset button hidden away well under the dash, towards the center console/dash side. Look up instructions on how to reset it. Mine seemed to go away for a while, but would eventually come back on.

Might be time to invest in some electrical tape to fix that

Might have had a small crack in the valve stem and the inspector made it into a big crack when jamming the gauge into it.

Sounds like one of the batteries died. When you go to through the dash screen where it shows the tire pressure, are they all showing up or do you see something like -- next to one of them? I had the same issue recently after I got an oil change and tire rotation. Got almost home and light came on. They reflashed it and it went off for a bit, then came back on. Scanner showed battery weak. Fixed that one, then couple weeks later another one died. Ended up replacing all of them not long after when I bought a new set of tires. All good since.

Drive thru air check at Discount Tire (Louisiana Mall). Let them fill your tires while you stay warm in car. They will assist you if lights don't go out

FWIW, the only time I had issues with the tire light coming on for no reason, my main battery was going bad. New cars and the electronic components are power sensitive. Probably not your problem unless the light keeps coming on repeatedly for no reason and other sensor lights pop up.

If it blinks for a minute when you start the car that means a sensor needs to be replaced.
