I have tried multiple times and never had any luck with fall tomatoes. This year I am going to try a few Juliet grape tomatoes.

I used to plant Juliet and they did very well. This year I planted Jelly Bean. They are smaller than Juliet, but the taste of them is incredible.

Early Fall is in the ground

Tomatoes —mountain, Dixie , Amelia and Phoenix

Sweet corn
Contenders
Maxibel
Pole limas
Pole peas
Cream peas

Will put carrots , turnips, brocc, cauliflower and beats in the ground closer to Labor Day. Still picking peppers, eggplants and grape tomatoes. Will pull those and plant in a few weeks.

For some reason I'm having issues starting my tomato seeds. I'm thinking too much fertilizer in the starting soil. They get really long with only the sprouts before they start showing their second set of leaves, then begin to degrade. Never had a problem starting seeds before..

I had the same issue. I lowered my grow lights and replanted in slightly larger peat pot and covered up the stem a good bit as I read tomato plants are great with that as they just create more roots further up the stem.

I may need to push them down with a pencil to get more stem in the dirt, just never had a problem with them getting leggy like that before.

Did you start them inside under a light or outside?

I started mine outside in a spot that gets half a day of direct sunlight and they’re not too leggy. But when they’re big enough I’ll bury them deep like I normally would.

Outside in a similar spot as you. I buried them deeper this afternoon. We'll see.

Start them outside. Bury deep. Put in morning sun only. Shouldn’t get direct sun beyond noon.

Has anyone tried freezing okra? How does it hold up after it’s thawed?

I’ve got okra coming out of my arse over here and running out of space in the fridge.

Okra freezes very well. I wash them and allow them to dry. Slice into desired size slices. Place in the oven at 300F for about 5 minutes. Let cool then stick in a bag and freeze.

I vacuum seal mine, but I don’t don’t let it vacuum to the point of crushing the slices.

Thanks, I'll have to see if I can control the suction of my vacuum sealer.

Whats the purpose of putting them in the oven?

Just helps to dry them out some. I just do it like that cause that’s how my parents told me to do it. Seems to work fine.

Yep. It’s been a while since I’ve grown lettuce, but remember the magic month was October.

For those that grow pumpkins, do you apply sevin dust or another insecticide to the plant? Do you wait until you see damage and then apply or go ahead and apply preventatively? This is my first year trying to grow pumpkins so I’m pretty clueless
