Should I start from seed or a plant?

It's a little too late to start seeds. At this point it's best to get some transplants.

Also, peppers are very easy to grow and do well in our climate. I didn't see if you had mentioned any of those. I'm growing California Wonder (green bell peppers), jalapenos, cayenne, and Sweet Red Marconis.

ETA: Things like cucumbers, beans, and okra it's not too late to sow seeds. In fact those are best to direct sow in the garden and now is the perfect time.

I’ve successfully grown squash and zucchini with no borer casualties the last three growing seasons. You can do it, but you have to be cool with Sevin. I put dust in a turkey baster and dust the stalks of the squash and zucchini plants about once every 10 days or as needed depending on rain. I keep the dust away from the flowers and off of the fruit. The borer moths lay eggs on the stems of the leaves and I think when the larvae crawl to the stalk, the Sevin kills them.

I don’t like Sevin, but I like squash and zucchini more and I feel like even with my Sevin applications what I grow is better than what I could buy.

It works well, but you have to be diligent with it.

Start watching for a moth flying around your squash plants around mid April to mid May. Start using SEVIN then. I use SEVIN dust in one of these LINK cover the stem for about 6-8 inches from the ground. Do not get near the blossoms. I have to do this several times a week because of rain or watering. Another option I have done is grow winter squash in spring/summer and summer squash in the fall. Borers do not kill winter squash and by late summer, early fall they are gone.

Is it too late to plant tomatoes from seeds? I have some already in the ground and flowering and making fruit, but I was thinking about a second round.

Pretty much, unless you're planting heat tolerant varieties that set through the summer or cherry varieties. Most tomato varieties stop setting fruit when the temp gets consistently about 75-80 degrees at night.

That’s a bummer. Can I plant them for late summer to harvest in fall?

You're in Baton Rouge? Sure. I generally start fall tomato seeds indoors in mid June to plant out in mid-August/Labor Day.

In April.

I'm seeing a low of 39 for Friday morning at my place. But, with a 5-10 mph wind. The wind should prevent frost, and the temps won't be low enough to kill anything. I'm not going to worry about it.

Here she is. Plants are spaced 11 inches apart. 8 tomatoes in the front at San Marzano, next 4 are Big Beef, last 4 are Creole. I planted them pretty deep so most of them look small.

2 Keystone Giant green bell peppers in the front on that side, then 4 red and 4 yellow California Wonder, then 2 Cajun Belle, 2 Purple Beauty, last a red Marconi and yellow Marconi

Basil, Marigolds, and a few garlic planted around the perimeter. Asparagus planted throughout.

As long as I maintain good moisture and nutrition there should be no problem at all. Crowding wont be an issue with proper pruning.

Here's the rest:

Carrots, broccoli, potatoes, and corn. Chives planted around perimeter of carrots and rosemary on the other side of the broccoli. I know these things don't grow particularly well together but this is the only place I had left for them. And we shall see what the broccoli does. Had two plants left that were too pretty to not give them a shot

Eggplant, squash, pole beans, and radish around the perimeter of the eggplant.

4 rows of bush beans and 1 row of pole beans in the middle, and what will be sweet potatoes once the slips come in.

Arch trellis for sweet potatoes, squash, and some of the pole beans.

Strawberries, borage, and a few bush beans in between.

Kiowa blackberries

Prime Ark Freedom blackberries

One Arapaho blackberry that didn't take the freeze too well.

Lane muscadine

Black Beauty muscadine

Don't mind the massive growth of weeds behind my fence. I nuked that servitude over the weekend and it's dying a slow death.

Seems you watched a lot of Mel Bartholomew on PBS at one time----providing you're old enough to have been around then. He was a big proponent of square foot gardening and had his own show.

I do have one 48 sq. ft. raised bed that I use for root crops and the rest of my garden is traditional with 5 rows 50 ft. long. I also have 3 large trellises for climbers and have them planted with cukes, yard long beans and Kentucky Wonder pole beans.

I just got back from getting some transplants from the garden center. I picked up 6 each of habanero, ghost, bell peppers and a pack of zucchini seeds.

Nice looking beds. Wished my blackberries looked like that.

One thing though...you're going to want to move that rosemary plant. It will quickly become a rosemary bush, and not a small one.

I have a small raised bed on the side of my house that's 2ft x 8ft, and that rosemary plant took up half of it, while one oregano plant took up the other half. The main trunk on it is about an inch thick. That's what's left of it after pruning I figure if it doesn't survive the transplant, which is seems to be doing fine, then I can just buy another one. This thing has had a good run, and as much as we use rosemary when cooking, we could never keep up with it.
