Go gas

No complaints here.... if the power is out, run it off generator. Some may say it takes a while to get hot water from the tap, if you cant wait 30sec to jump in the shower, then go to a tank.

I've been thinking about switching. The only thing I'm not sure about is if my gas line is big enough. If it's not I'm not doing it. I will research it one day.

Get a gas one and there aren’t any cons

The only con I have is I have to wait a few minutes longer than I like waiting for the hot water to travel from the front of the house all the way to the back of the house when we take showers in the master bath. Small price to pay for unlimited hot water, though.

Navien makes models of tankless water heater that can operate off a “standard” 1/2 inch gas line, and some models have integrated recirculation pump to provide “instantaneous” hot water. LINK. My brother in law, a master plumber, is going to install one for me.

I don't have gas available where I live so I have an electric one. Why is it everyone swears by gas ones? It's just me and my wife so our demand isn't through the roof but I have never had a problem with mine.

We're renovating a house that was built in 1881. It has gone through various stages of updating through the years.

We're thinking of changing to a tankless water heater. The house already has propane so that wouldn't be much of an issue.

Make sure you have gas, for sure.

Best part is you can shower for days, if you so desire…

Looks like I have 1" going Into my house. Not sure where it splits in the attic. It's a far run to my water heater. Maybe 50-100 feet. I've never run gas line but I'm sure I could do it.

Only issue I have is it can be hard to get hot water just running a sink faucet, I.e. for shaving etc. seems at least some systems have a water flow minimum to work properly. That combined with the new “low flow” faucets results in no hot water.

Then get propane, which is what I have. An electric tankless water heater is very inefficient

I have this problem only about 20% of the time. Sometimes I just flip the tub or second vanity faucet on, and it triggers.

Water temp is a little lower than I’d like and was getting from my tank, but it does fine.
You can flip some dip switches under the cover and turn the heat up on Rheem models. I’ve done this. It’s still 5-10F cooler than I wish it was.

What MLU said - a little more time to get hot water. Otherwise no cons and its cheaper gas bills. I have had one for 5 yrs ... not going back to a tank

I do the same thing. Wife had to have certain faucets and the ones in our bath are low flo which makes use sometimes have to turn both on at same time to trigger

Loved the ones I put in. The gas supply lines were sufficient, but the vent pipes weren’t. Will do it again when I get to my next house.

That's what we went with. Controlled by an app and a schedule in place to keep instant hot water for certain hours of the day. It's amazing!

My Navien has a recirculating pump so lines always have warm water.

To OP, for a Gas Tankless, there is simply no con.

I have two neighbors that each have a two tankless heaters and one of each's is "broken".

They can't seem to get them "fixed" as the electrician and the plumber can't agree on who and how to fix them.

That's the only con I've heard.

This isn't b/c you have a tankless. it's b/c where your tankless is located in relation to your shower. I have two tankless gas water heaters and i'd never go back to a tank. my heaters are located in my attic near the fixtures they supply. There is no delay for the hot water

If I'm reaching for a con, it's that when you lose electricity, you don't have the 40-50 reserve of hot water in the attic. A tankless gas water heater will still need a little power to ignite and run the thermostat. But even a very small generator would power a gas water heater easily.
