St Aug sod webworm damage and recovery

sod webworms hit my St Aug pretty hard...a few patches are almost all dead with a few runners putting up some green...was wondering if there was anything I could put down to try to push a little growth to help jump start the recovery before the growing season ends or is it too late?

Big fan of command soil
It’s expensive but it works

I will leave the real advice to the turf mtce guys among us. However, my yard was hit pretty bad by those bastards last year and it rebounded nicely this year. I don’t know that there is a lot that you can do at this point in the summer…you don’t want a flush of new growth immediately hit by a frost. You leave far enough south, to where frost is not prevalent, so I would just keep it watered and fertilize in the spring.

It’s too late in the year to fertilize with high nitrogen fertilizers to push vegetative growth, However, you can fertilize now with what is often referred to a “winterizer fertilizer” which is potassium that will strengthen & promote root growth which will be of benefit to weakened-stressed turf.
Look for a 0-0-60 Muriate of Potash (potassium) fertilizer. I think an application rate of 1/2 lb to 1 lb per 1000 sq ft would appropriate. You can buy smaller bags at most larger retail garden centers in BR.
Now is the time to apply it while the grass is still in active growth and it can uptaken by the grass.

The damage will start to really show when it tries to green up in spring.

But did you start to treat and kill webworms? Make sure you have a plan for them next year.

I keep Anderson’s Duocide in stock at my house for this very reason. Never know when they’ll show up.

yeah...i hit them with Bt when I saw the moths a few weeks ago, but that didn't seem to stop them...a week later I put down Bioadvanced COmplete and had to leave town for 10 days...upon return it doesn't look like any more spread since then but still seeing a few moths
will be prepared next year for sure

Depending on the size, I’ve had pretty good luck with it coming back if you are close to the gulf coast. It may not grow like summer but my grass does usually continue growing until it gets really cold.

Probably too late in the season to recover your grass (st. Aug will be going dormant soon). Next spring, kill any weeds in the damaged areas, wait a few weeks, then sod your damaged areas. To keep a handle in my yard, I apply Bifen granules in late April (I do 2 applications 10 days apart). Then I’ll do that same cycle 3 months later.

Is it too late to spray for them? Just noticed a little spot in my backyard today.
