I just received a quote for our front and back yard. I am being told that St. Augustine and Zoysia is the same price, is that correct?

Also, we have a pretty big back yard and the project includes: removing all old grass and soil in backyard (4-6 inches deep), install river silt dirt to entire area with proper grading, includes leveling and grading correctly for front yard. Quoted 30,000 for all. Not sure if that's a good price or not.

St Aug and Zoysia were the same price when I got mine 2 years ago. I wouldn't trust anyone putting river silt under sod. You're asking for neverending weed issues.

Pretty big back yard
Compared to the Biltmore or the Garden District?

Out of the two options, Zoysia is a no brainer.

Find a new sod company. Anyone that calls themselves a professional but then says they are bringing in riversilt just soon sod your lawn with torpedo grass and call it a day.

A couple of years ago I was told by a landscape architect that "pumped river silt" did not have the same weed problem that silt from pits in the batture does. Maybe that's true. I don't know.

I suspect that most commercial "garden soil" made in so La. has a fair amount of pit silt mixed in, weed seeds and all.

the problem is you won’t know until it’s way too late. It’s a shame because river silt is obviously abundant, cheap and the perfect substrate for planting and grasses…it’s what this entire state was created out of

Torpedo grass was deliberately imported from Eurasia for cattle forage and now it’s probably the continents worst weed ever known

It could be true, the problem isn’t that you don’t know, it’s that they don’t know either.

It’s just a risk you shouldn’t take.

Where do you live?
Probably a combo of sand and soil. Like this.

Help me with the thinking of removing 5-6" of dirt?

I don't understand this. What would that accomplish?

I thought the same thing. That's a lot of the total cost.

If you really are talking about an enormous yard, I would totally skip this step by glyphosating twice over and simply tilling what you have, rather than removing and importing. I can't make sense of it.

That’s a lot of money for a torpedo lawn.

Ask the the use sand or top soil. If the dump riversilt for them immediately

It's about 18,000 square feet total between back and front. When previous owner put pool in, they spread the dirt and it is 90% clay and we have sodded twice now and has never been successful.

Before you spend another dime, you need to know why this didn't work...

How much shade do you have?
What kind of grass did you try?

30k sounds a bit steep for about .4 of an acre.

Why not Bermuda? I would find someone to amend the current soil unless it is full of rocks.
