Any of y’all change to a different weighted motor oil for hot summer months to cut down on consumption?

Was reading another forum and some of the lawn pros were talking about it. I have a John Deere zero turn that cuts acreage

Nah. I started using 5w-40 in all of air cooled stuff and just use it year round. If you're using any kind of wide spanning multigrade in louisiana I definitely wouldn't worry about it. And even if you're using SAE40, I still wouldn't worry about it.

I don't swap grades and go into the season with a fresh oil change and do 1 oil change & filter in mid season with occasional top ups as needed.
I use SAE 30 as per manufacturer in a 16 year-old single cyl. Briggs and cut about 1 ac here in DS/BR.

The user manual has all of the engineer recommendations.

Usually, unless you're in extremes like Minot or frick arse cold Canada, one grade is all that is called for.

I remember years ago when I had my old Harley Panhead. I'd use SAE50 in the winter and SAE70 in the summer months. That inline air cooled engine would get hot in the summer months in traffic.

Kawasaki recommends 20w50 in Texas and Louisiana. Kohler also suggest it if consumption of sae30 or 10w30 is an issue. It's not for most but for some who are mowing quite a while on a larger yard it can be an issue. 20w50 will help reduce consumption but it will always be an issue so always check the dipstick before mowing.

I always run the recommended viscosity per the mfg. I run Amsoil, too.
