This is kind of what I have going

Contactor A: We’ll handle the roof, facia, siding, gutters and fight the insurance comp for more money. Adjuster missed all kinds of stuff. Sign this contract for the entirely of your claims check and we’ll get to work. We’re going to get you some more money.

Contractor B: Here’s the cost for a new roof ($6,000 less than Contractor A). I’ll do everything associated with the roof removal/ replacement. No gutters, facia or siding but I can get you some phone numbers for that. You handle lining them up.

I do not think I have $6,000 worth of other damage. Probably 3-4k. Which guy should I use?

If there is legitimate additional damage, take photos and send into the insurance, let them know now there is missed damage. They might elect to handle the additional damages via the office or might send an adjuster back out. If they send someone back out, have a contractor picked out and have them present at the inspection.

Whoever you use, get references of people they have used recently and call them. Check online to see if they have had complaints.

Thanks. Both have been referred by several people around here. The insurance fighter dude seems a tad shady and more expensive, but I like that he’ll handle everything. Other dude is just a good ole boy roofer. He does excellent work though

Nothing wrong with having a competent pitbull, many times it is better from the insured's perspective to have roofer/ contractor familiar with the claims process. With that being said, take price out of the equation, it has no meaning to you in this case beyond your deductible.

do you live in a hail-prone area?

If so, look into upgrading to impact resistant shingles. Your insurance company might give you enough of a discount to pay for the additional cost in 5 years or less.

Nope. I would not agree to Assignment of Benefits (look it up.) You're signing over the rights and benefits of your insurance policy to the contractor.

If there’s legit additional damage that you want fixed, call your insurance company and have contractor A come out with the insurance adjuster. I wouldn’t sign a contract for all work to be done until you know how much the insurance company will pay. Maybe see if Contractor A will write up some type of contingency agreement...if they can get insurance to pay more for additional damages, you agree to use them for the repairs

This is how it is done in most cases in TX. Why wouldn't you want it done this way if they agree to work for insurance proceeds to repair/replace everything that you were paid damages for?

Just make sure your contract with the roofer spells out exactly what work they are responsible for and make sure it matches the damage on the insurance claim. Don't make any assumptions or presumptions.

I would be a man. Walk around myself and see what is damaged.

Hail damage does not hide from you, if it’s there you see it. If you do not see it, it’s not there.

If I find damage my insurer missed I take some photos and send to them. Ask for reinspection if necessary.

Contractor is trying to make money off you. It’s a business.

Most insurance adjusters don’t care either way. It’s easiest to pay. If it’s damaged they will pay for it. If not they won’t.

I would not sign a contract until I know who I want to use and exactly what work will be done and what it will cost.

Many contractors will help you without pushing you into a contract until you are ready to sign it. They will meet with you and the insurance guy and try to help you sort it all out. Insurance companies are not out to get you, but some adjusters are more thorough than others so look at things close before they come out and have a list of things you want to talk about and be prepared.
