I have a black lab and a collie mix that will dig foot deep holes in my yard and I’m damn tired of filling them back in, I already shock them with their collar but i can’t be outside with them all the time. Any remedies that y’all use to help prevent dogs from digging? I already use a shite ton of cayenne pepper and spray the holes with white vinegar as a deterrent but sometimes they just don’t give a damn. All help is appreciated!

I have an adopted airdale terrier and he digs like nobody's business. I think unless you are hyper aware and can figure out a way to correct the behavior, just accept you're going to be filling in holes. With terriers its a natural thing, but maybe not so with labs. My labs and retrievers never dug very much. Don't know much about collies and their traits.

I saw this on social media so take it with a grain of salt, but someone suggested fillling up a mini pool with sand.I believe the thought process is the dog is going to dig so try snd contain it.

Shoot the dog or live with it. Dogs dig holes.

How old is it? You may just have to wait it out.

With a lab/collie mix, some age, a lot of exercise, and correcting it when you catch it should eventually get you there.

A lab and a collie should be able to be taught what you don't want them to do. A few long walks everyday and tiring it out with a tennis ball would probably do the trick.

Im still waiting to see if this works long term but I found a dead bird in the backyard. I buried it in my dogs favorite digging spot. She started to dig a little but stopped.

I started putting their shite in all of the holes and filling it in.

Has seemed to stop the issue pretty well.

That's a good plan. How about stopping the bastards from pissing in the same spots right by the patio

Putting their crap in the holes and covering with dirt has always worked for me.

I've dealt with this with some success by giving the dogs multiple other activities. The digging was caused by boredom in my case.

One of the best ideas I tried was stretching some paracord between trees and from that hanging a knotted rope and a leather glove at the end of another drop. Dogs loved attacking the rope and glove and the springy action made it that much more appealing.

Sounds like a solid plan.

I've been peeing in the holes after i fill them in and that has seemed to help as well.

If they’re digging in the same spots, put some chicken wire over the top of the hole next time you fill it. Grass will grow through it and it’s uncomfortable for the dogs when their claws hit it while digging.

Luckily my digger only hit one spot and that worked pretty well. But who knows. You may wind up with a bunch of new holes.

My dog was pissing in the same spot and killing the grass. Sprinkled a box of baking soda in the spot and that ended it.

My dog used to dig when he was bored - see if running them a bit (tennis ball, walks, etc) everyday helps. After 20 or so minutes of throwing the ball, I end up with a dog not interested in digging and more interested in laying in the shade.

Like another poster said - you could try distractions like hiding treats above ground or in kong balls for prolonged entertainment.

Further - some dogs lay in holes when its real hot - maybe put a kitty pool in some shade if that seems to be an issue.

My backyard has an area that looks like a German bombing raid on London. Just holes and holes and holes. I've tried everything.. He just keeps digging.

Putting their poop in the holes works well.
