Refrigerator Odor

My mother used to do this to get rid of odors:

Place a slice of white bread (it must be white bread) in a bowl and cover bread with vinegar. Leave the bowl in the musty area for 24 hours. The yeast action in the bread combines with the acid values of the vinegar to absorb the odor.

Put a bag of charcoal in it and let it run for a few days

Curious… did you close it or leave it open after emptying? I’ve always propped them open for the duration of the power outage.

Toothpaste also work as a hand cleaner. Removes all smells from your hands. Even fish smells.

Take out all shelves

Spray white vinegar…wipe

Spray bleach…………wipe

Spray 409 or other cleaner ….wipe

I did not want to leave it open in case the power came back on while I was out of town. Guess I could’ve unplugged it but in our house it say real pain to get to the plug

I had a similar problem after Laura. I kept a refrigerator running with generator. But after a few days, I emptied it out and cleaned the refrigerator in garage so I did not have to swap around what I kept running. Every few days, I ran it a couple of hours to keep it from setting up.

But after 3 weeks, the freezer only got "cool" and I thought I has lost it..... it was 31 years old. A week later we got power. I checked to freezer the next day and it was very cold, but had a bad smell.

All the surfaces were clean, so I took off the freezer bottom plastic part. This part and "vent" holes behind the front ridge. So when I cleaned it, I scrapped the "gunk" to the front and some of the gunk went under the plastic bottom.

After removing the bottom piece, there was styrofoam insulation. I cleaned it a couple of times, but it still smelled. I then sprinkled coffee all over the "dirty" area. I cleaned up the coffee the next day and it was much better, but stilled smelled some so I put more coffee on it. Two days later, no more smell and I put it back together. Now a year later, that refrigerator is still running.
