Have had two snakes in my backyard the past weeks. One was a copperhead that I took by surprise and removed its head. Another appeared to be a big king snake that got away from me. I have small kids playing in my backyard, so I can’t take chances on this stuff. My house backs up to woods, so I’m sure there’s a lot back there

Anyone have recommendations for how to best keep snakes out?

snakes are part of the ecosystem and will do their thing regardless of you. Best deterrent is a dog.

copperheads are out eating insects and small vermin. Kings are out eating copperheads. Sounds to me like you already have things covered

Best thing that could’ve happened considering your issue.

Not sure if it would suit you but Guineas and also chickens help with snake control. Heck so do barn cats. Not sure your setting outside the woods backing up to you. Snakes are there for some type of food source. Eliminate that and it will help. Bifen granules in the yard is a suggestion.

Your concern is valid, but at the same time the snakes will leave you and your kids alone if you leave them alone.

Biggest snake attractor for suburban/rural areas are rats and mice which can have high population numbers before you might notice.

If you have woods nearby, this is a battle you can not win. the best you can hope for is to minimize snakes by controlling what attracts them, mainly rodents which can be controlled with poisons and traps.

They are also controlled with Kingsnecks and rat snakes, both of which you should educate yourself and your children to identify. Fortunately, King snakes and Garter/ribbon snakes are absolutely unique. Rat snakes can be a little tougher.

Yea I realize the kings are good in this case. I wanted to positively ID it before doing anything, but if it had been venomous I would have killed it. Got away before I could tell for sure, but big gray/brown mostly single colored snake. Head may have been slender but hard to tell when it gets away fast

Now that I look up rat snake, it was probably one of those. But hard to tell when I only had a glimpse

King snakes are great to keep in the yard. They will take care of any rodent problems you have. You might not have any because of said snakes. The king snakes we used to have always hide in the bushes away from us. If it came along my path, it slithered away unless I got real close to it.

Only time we ever had an issue was when we were doing some demolition and the snake decided to hide in the rock pile we were tossing into a dumpster. It got territorial and tried to bite, but only from where it was sitting.

The snake will not bite your children on purpose. Only if it is backed into a corner and needs to defend itself.

Cat

Make sure you have no rodents that might attract the snakes as a food source.

Spray them with a hose and they'll go away. They don't want to go back to an area where they run into people.

Cat

There is no product that will keep snakes away. (Snake away, moth balls...etc.) Those are lies.

Only thing you can really do is not have snake food (mice, rats, toads, nesting songbirds) around. Cats are great at getting rid of those things, and will kill snakes too.

I doubt it was a copperhead. It was probably a rat snake. Send a pic, my 7 year old daughter can tell you.

There is a granular product you can get at Home Depot, Lowe’s or Amazon that you sprinkle around areas such as fence lines and the foundation of your home.

Be forewarned that the overwhelming majority of snakebites happen because a person is, in some way, dicking with a snake. When you attempt to kill or remove a snake you are many times more likely to be bitten by said snake than if you had just watched it slither away.

Teach your children this reality, and take it to heart yourself. Be aware and know snakes are out there and will always be out there, and remember that they don't want to bite you, but they will if you mess with them.
