I know it's getting to be about that time, but not quite yet. Here's my question. I'm going to be on vacation the first 2 weeks of October, so I can either put it down next weekend before I go or wait until I get back and put it down around October 15-16ish. Which would be better?

I think you're good either way as long as you get it down in October.

I think temps need to consistently stay at 75 degrees or less.

Be on the safe side, and do it next weekend - a little early is better than a little late.

Glad you posted this, just realized Oct is right around the corner and I need to do it this year. Will be my first time doing a preemergent, I assume you spray it around shortly after mowing

Can anyone share the link for average soil temps by zip code?

GreenCast Soil Temperature Alerts

The important thing with pre-emergents is to water it in after application - you need to get the herbicide into the soil where the weed seeds germinate. If you can time the application before a rain, even better.

It’s still going to be warm until the beginning of October. I think you are fine waiting as long as you are ready to roll when you get back.

I am waiting until around that time, but am also trying to get as much as my grass to fill in before pre emergent so I don’t stunt that process. Post emergent revealed some areas that were entirely weeds, so doing damage control now.

When soil temps average between 70-75 degrees you'd be good.
Enter your zip code
