I saw a thread here about Cliqstudios shutting down and it got me thinking about cabinets in our new construction home.

The current plan is to go with pre-fab cabinets. We have our reasons, but the biggest is not only the cost to build custom, but the insane cost to have them painted.

Does anyone here have any experience with any particular pre-fab cabinet manufacturers and can steer me away from the bad ones and steer me toward the good ones?

TIA

Have you priced local custom cabinets? In my experience, local custom was cheaper unless you are using lots of detail moldings.

No, no detailed mouldings. Nothing fancy here. But the custom guys have quoted me upwards of 40% more than pre-fab. And, that's before paying someone to paint! I've had paint quotes all come in between $100 and $125 per linear foot to paint.

If you know of any custom guys out there that are established and reputable, please let me know. I'm open to anything right about now.

Thanks.

We bought Kraftmaid cabinets. Full plywood construction, wood doors, etc.

I bought from a rep out of around Slidell and he installed them for me.

In this area, custom cabinet shops are everywhere. I find it hard to believe you can get a pre-fab set of similar quality than from a custom builder.

What exactly are you asking for, and what are you being quoted? In terms of materials and details?

For the paint, are you asking for some specialty finish? For new construction, the cost to paint the cabinets as part of the house is pretty incremental. Unless there’s a specialty finish or color, etc.

We used cabinetgiant.com for our first house.
They came with the faces/doors together but I had to assemble the boxes, and drawers. Boxes were all plywood, drawers we had were maple with dove tailed joints.

They all had soft close slides and hinges. We lived in the house for about 5 years and the only issue we had was a slide stop soft closing. Made a call and had a new slide in 3-days. I’d use them again if needed.

I found it hard to believe at first too, but the facts are the facts.

I'm asking for solid wood constructed cabinets, soft close hardware, shaker style cabinets with dovetail joints on the drawers (no stapled corners). Custom cabinet shops are coming in at "double" the cost of some of the best prefab cabinets.

Nothing fancy. Plain jane white on the perimeter and olive on the island in the kitchen. Whites in the bathrooms. I'm the GC and the best price I've found is $100 per linear foot on cabinet painters.

This exactly what we got from DL Cabinetry. Best prices and quality we found by far. Call them, in New Orleans. They’ll give you a price on the phone and they have most in stock. Costs about $15 per unit for them to assemble. Worth it.

DL is your best option by a mile, only problem they are shut down as of yesterday and didn’t know when they were going to reopen. Also they are low on stock, but have two containers sitting at the port of NOLA so hopefully they can get them and get past the corona and open up soon.

Cabinet joint. Com

They have a YouTube channel with a bunch of videos. Check it out.

We used them for our kitchen renovation. Totally custom, thousands of colors, wood species, sizes down to 1/16”. I recommend getting a designer they recommend, they will credit back the expense of you buy.

I 3rd DL in New Orleans East. Bought cabinets and counter tops from them. Saved a ridiculous amount of money. Looking at my kitchen you would never know they are “inexpensive” cabinets.
