So putting a new pool in(36x16) with a spa. Gunite pool. My pool contractor allotted me roughly $5500 for pool plaster. I researched different types and was told Diamond Brite was the best in the industry. Contractor says it could possibly double the cost for the plaster and that it’s a waste of money and also rough on your feet. Any suggestions on type of plaster?

Once I find a plaster type I looked around at pool plaster colors and originally wanted a darker bottom pool. Everyone I talk to in the pool industry says that a dark pool is a bad idea because of a couple of reason. 1. Calcium build up shows easily and 2. The pool gets hotter in the summer. Any experience with this?

Finally if I don’t go dark I at least want to go with a medium blue. I have see some pools where the water looks greenish and I definitely don’t want that so I’m looking for a pool plaster color that’s a medium blue that also makes the water look blue. Any suggestions?

Thank you

I’m not sure if it’s considered a plaster type but we went the pebble tech route. Best decision I ever made. Also it’s pretty dark and I was worried about the additional heat, but I really don’t think it made a significant difference. Have had no trouble with anything showing up on it going on 6 years.

Diamond Brite is a quartz that lasts a lot longer than standard plaster finishes. But it should in no way be double the cost. It is maybe $1.00 sf more however it is much longer lasting.

I have it in a gray between medium and dark, it is 21 years old and looks fine. I’ve never touched it.

My pool like any gets hot in the shallow end and stays cool in the deep end. It’s South Louisiana. It’s wet and that’s fine enough with me. It’s not rough on your feet. You can ask the plasterers to slick it as best they can-it still has an aggregate-which you want, but they can lay it down a bit.

In my experience, Diamond Brite is a good product, and it shouldn't be double the cost of white plaster. It will not be as smooth as a marble plaster, but it isn't rough.

If you are looking for an ultra smooth finish, a marble plaster, such as Hydrazzo, is the way to go. It won't be cheap, but that's because it is a top-of-the-line finish.

I'm sort of in your boat. I am going with Diamond Brite but have not picked my color. Good to know about the darker colors. I want a nice rich blue. I was kind of looking at Super Blue and Tahoe Blue. I see they also do a mix of 8:2 Super:Tahoe and call it Tahiti Blue.

I have a neat high fired Japanese porcelain blue subway tile for my waterline and I don't want anything with a green hue for the plaster.

We finished ours last September and went with Diamond Brite French Grey and we absolutely love it. It's a slightly darker, more modern look, but the blue still really pops in direct sunlight. We haven't had it during the summer yet, but I can't imagine it's going to make much of a difference because it isn't dark at all. Even though it's a grey plaster, the water is still a blue color.

Since no one has mentioned it yet, here you go: troublefreepool.com

You will learn EVERYTHING that you ever need to know about pools there...and do not take maintenance advice from pool stores.

I have diamond brite (cool blue color). built in 2012 and no issues, no regrets.

United Chemicals Pool Stain Treat is about $18 for 2lb and I put add it every month or two and keeps it prestine.

Diamond brite is fine. Your contractor is likely trying to get you to use a cheaper plaster so he can keep the difference.

Any colored plaster has risks. They are just pigment mixed into white plaster. If they don't mix it perfectly, you get color variation. Over time, colored plaster is more likely to show calcium and chemical stains, which are generally white. Definitely don't get a colored plaster if you are going to have a pool service maintain the water chemistry. They will frick it up and ruin your plaster.

I went with a white pebble finish and it looks fantastic.

Here to second Diamond bright..However we wanted a bit of a green blue look. We have brick coping and the waterline tile had some blue and green in it..We have a shallow pool so we also stayed away from darker colors.

THe color of the plaster basically looks like the color of the sandbar water in destin/pensacola on a good day if you were looking at it from a birds eye view with a bit more blue than green in it.
