I want to buy a new lawnmower this spring and I was pretty dead set on going with the Honda from Home Depot for $409. I was in Costco on Saturday and they had a Husqvarna AWD with a Honda engine for $329. The Husqvarna seems heavier and is AWD. The Honda is a RWD.

Is it worth it to save $80 and go with the Husqvarna?

I don't know the answer to your question but I just got rid of a Troybilt with Honda motor that lasted me 10 years. I mow 3/4 of an acre, roots everywhere in crappy terrain that I put that mower through hell with. It was self propelled and did me well.

What did you replace the Troybilt with?

I haven't replaced it yet but I won't start mowing till first of April, at earliest end of March. I'm still fuming over having to replaced a, at the most 4 year old washing machine yesterday to even think about it.

I have a Honda RWD self-propelled and a Husqvarna AWD. The Honda is like a mid 1990's Toyota Tacoma SR5 PreRunner, the Husqvarna is like a 1990's Dodge Ram 4x4 5.2L. Like the Ram, the Husqvarna has everything wrong with it but the engine while the Honda just works.

Get the Honda, check K & D rental. They had the best price

I'd go with the cheaper one, if it was me. Cause that's how I am.

Not sure if you care about AWD, FWD, or RWD. I have a front wheel drive and it has worked ok. I just learned how to maneuver with it and not letting go of the bar that allows it to run.

Don't know about the Husqvarna but avoid the HD Honda's. I've bought two and the drives always break. If you are set on a Honda, buy it from a place that can repair it like k&d.

I bought a Toro smartstow last year and I like it. I don't have a lot of storage in my garage so I like that it stores upright.

So the Honda’s at K&D are better quality than the Honda that I would get at HD or Lowe’s?

You have to really work at it to mess up that self-propel setup. If you get a Husqvarna then you better memorize #580364301. Thats the idler pulley for the belt on the self-propel that you'll be replacing every few seasons.

I have a Husqvarna RWD drive with a Honda engine, going on5-6 years now. Still starts on first pull, i haven't done any maintenance on it. Just fill with non-ethanol gas. I would go with the AWD, assuming it'll be easier to walk behind. I switched to a John Deere riding mower because my yard slopes 3 feet from front to back and i basically have to push the mower instead of just waking behind it across the face of the slope. I still use the Husqvarna to get to tight spots or if I'm doing a quick mow in the front yard.

The real question is why does everyone need self-propelled? Save $200 and get a push mower. They just aren’t that hard to push, weigh less, are more maneuverable, and more reliable.

Eh there’s no reason to hate. Some of the self propelled go faster then you can push a mower. They basically pull you, so your cutting time is reduced pretty drastically.

I prefer to get a self propelled because:
- I have a 6 foot incline in my front yard.
- My wife will sometimes cut grass on the weeks that I don’t need to edge and weed eat.
- I am lazy.

If you like the Honda mower from HD. Ask to speak to the manager and tell him you want a quality discount and they will reduce the price. I did that last year on a $ 599 Honda mower and they took $100 off. First he $50 and a said you can do better than that then he offer 100 and I did I take it.

I will do this. All they can do is tell me NO. Then I will tell them that I will buy from K&D or similar place.

But what exactly is a quality discount?

I'd go to the local places, often times now the local places are very competitive if not cheaper on similar equipment to the big boxes. Plus they know their shite and that's who you will buy parts and what not from. I'm not a big box hater, I just think for things like power equipment its worth buying local.
