So my wife wants to add shutters to the front of our house. I say if we're doing it, they might as well be functional. She got a quote from Lowes, and I was shocked. I think our windows measure 81"x48". Anyone make their own shutters? Recommendations for someone in the Baton Rouge/Ascension area?

are you wanting plantation shutters?

ETA: I misread...you are talking about exterior shutters

Based on a quick google search, I don't think we are looking for plantation shutters. Board & Batten shutters seems to be what they are called.

I have four that are 84” like this if you want them. You’d have to trim them down a bit.

I just built board and batten shutters for 4 - 85" tall windows. 8 shutters total. Now I know why they cost so much. Been 4 weekends now and I still am not done.

How wide are they? That looks like what we are looking for.

17”

It wouldn’t be functional in your case.

So if we closed them then they wouldn't cover the window completely. Those would be more decorative than functional, which my wife wouldn't have a problem with.

Correct.

We originally were going to put those upstairs on two French doors but it was too much and they’ve been sitting in my garage for a year.

I know the feeling. I just got a quote from a regional door and window/shutter company for 10 non-functional, composite board and batten shutters. Quote was nearly 3k installed.

Those are some of the easiest shutters to build, but you have to use quality wood like Spanish Cedar or Redwood or you run the risk of them cupping, especially if exposed to direct sunlight.

New growth cypress and treated wood just won't work is my experience. Once finished, painted and hung, it was only a few months before they started cupping and had to be replaced.

i built some from 5/4 deck board and put them on the south side of a house on the beach at morgantown, AL. they get direct sun all winter and constant exposure to weather, and i have seen no problems after 3 years.
