need a new fridge

preferably french doors on top, freezer underneath
really don't need a smart fridge (can't even believe that's a thing)
dimensions 35x69 on current model
most interested in something that's gonna last
don't want to break the bank, maybe looking at mid range
what are best brands?
how much am i looking at spending?

I've got a Samsung. Haven't had any real issues other than the ice maker freezing up with a certain someone else in the house doesn't close the door good which allows frost to build up and freezes up the ice maker. It's exactly like the one you described though. We got the model with the ice in the door and the ice maker in the freezer.
Seems like $2000 to $2500 seems to be about the going rate. You can find cheaper and more expensive.

But... you need your fridge to notify you when the milk is low or you need eggs or butter, don't you? And preferably one with and app on it so you can see what the temp inside is from your phone any time of the day or night. You just don't know you need it yet.

I bought a GE profile recently as it was about all I could find that was as you described and also did not have ice/water in the door, just wanted a cleaner look.

My french door Samsung with the ice machine located in the top right always seems to need to be defrosted. I have to pull out a hair dryer and hit it for 5-10 minutes at least once a month. I'd most likely buy something else if I was in the market again.
I do recommend a fridge with the extra beverage drawer though. Nice to only open the small drawer when we're just wanting a drink. Also, if you're considering countertop depth, plan on having a deep freezer since there is very little space.

Do not buy LG french door. Going on year two with ours and we’re on the third compressor.
First one went out just after the 12 month warranty expired.

Mine has an internal water dispenser. I did not want it on the outside due to cleanliness.

Appliance shopping sucks right now. No real deals to be had. We needed a new washer, wanted a top load, we started off with a list of a few we wanted, couldn't find any. We finally settled on buying the first one we could find that wasn't ridiculously priced. Everyone was just out of stock on anything basic, and most anything under $1k. Ended up with a $800 Samsung top load that gets pretty good reviews.

Mine as well but we dont use it, have an old fridgidaire in the laundry room with ice and water in the door.

I got this Whirlpool from Best Buy and love it. I went with whirlpool because when looking for all my kitchen appliances, I found they have the product most likely to last 10 years (the target for all major appliance manufacturers).
The main reason I went with that particular model is because of the 2nd ice maker in the freezer. When we have people over we don’t have to worry about the little in door ice maker keeping up with demand.

We have a new Samsung fridge like you're talking about. If the door on ours is not fully closed, it plays a nice little beeping alarm after like 45 seconds.

We bought this one a couple of years ago. All my family had the french doors with ice and water in the door, and no matter the brand they all have trouble with that. Plus I hate the way the French Doors close. There's not enough storage in there, especially with the ice maker taking up space. This Maytag has the ice in the freezer. The one big door up top is great. Room to store gallon milk jugs in the door. And the drawer set up is great too.

There is a small margin between the door being just barely open enough to not trigger the sensor, but big enough to let the temp warm up just slightly. I think more of the problem is if the door isn't closed fully, the water to the ice maker splashes around and that splatter freezes. I'm just guessing there. I haven't really looked too close at it. Just defrost it and dry it out then move on.
I'm not advocating for or against Samsung. OP asked for experience and I gave mine. No real issues other than those that are self inflicted.

I'll +1 for GE. We have the Adora (HD specific line) and it was an amazing value. Has ice and water in the door (a must imo) and an auto water filler that is the best thing ever. Had a Frigidaire before this (prior house) that was a good fridge and lasted many years, but the fit and finish wasn't as good as the GE.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy a Samsung.
My bottom ice maker crapped out, and the top one drips water out of the dispenser and freezes up about once a month.
