Question for those knowledgeable on roofing........The crew that installed my Atlas shingles put 6 nails in the left half of the shingle and a single nail toward the edge in the right half of the roof.......a very lopsided distribution of the nails. Is there a reason for this or is it just sloppy work which will compromise the integrity of my shingles? See the diagram for clarity.

Yeah, that isn’t right. Go to the Atlas site and pull up the proper installation guide for your specific shingle.

7 nails per shingle is pretty awesome, unless they did it like that...

4 nails is standard installation and 6 nails is high wind and/or steep slope installation. I would have a big problem with the nailing pattern in your diagram.

Atlas Pinnacle shingles are weird size 42" with a different exposure than the standard 36" shingle. Buy a couple bundles of shingles to save in case you need to make a repair in the future. If Atlas stops making that size shingle repairs are difficult to make it look right using a standard size shingle.

What are the odds that I can get the contractor to fix this issue?

He is paid for materials only at this point……I’m not sure how to proceed from here but it seems to me these shingles need to be stripped off and new shingles installed again

I suspect I may be SOL but we will see…..any advice on ways to handle this is appreciated.

Where are you located? A city building inspector may or may not be able to help.

Improper installation voids the Atlas warranty. Atlas doesn't really honor their warranty even if installed properly. Google Atlas Chalet defective shingles.

LIMITATIONS OF COVERAGE (WHAT IS NOT COVERED)
ATLAS shall not be liable for and the Limited Warranties set forth herein do not apply to: a. Faulty or improper application of said product or products not installed or applied in accordance with the printed instructions on the product bundle wrappers.

First thing I have to ask is how do you know they used this nailing pattern and did they use it consistently?

Next, if you have a GC, let them go after the guy to fix it. But I’m assuming you don’t, so if you know for sure they used the pattern you illustrated, take it to the roofing contractor and confront him, civilly, about it. If you can, provide photos or details to him and tell him it doesn’t follow the installation instructions laid out by the manufacturer. Tell him you aren’t going to pay him the rest until it’s corrected.

If he refuses, the other poster’s advice about talking to a building inspector is good advice. Try to use their findings to leverage the contractor to do the right thing.

If he still refuses to do anything, send him a demand letter, documenting the issue(s) and stating what you want done to correct those issues, via certified mail. Save the receipt and a copy to try to protect yourself if he files a lien or tries to take you to court, since you are NOT going to pay him a dime more until you’re satisfied the job is done correctly.

Good luck!

I literally watched this same thing happen to the house across the street from me this morning.

Freaked me the hell out. They used upside down shingles as the starters, then put at least 6 sometimes 7 nails starting in the middle and working left.

They started the tear off at 730 this morning and all but 2 guys are gone by 1pm. Too fast for my liking, quickly scratched them off my list.

Is it a local company or some out of state roofers? I've had 2 or 3 out of state people knock on my down and say they can start on my roof within a couple weeks. I'm waiting the two months for the local guys just for these type of reasons.

I decided to look under a few shingles to check out nail penetration after finding other minor issues with the roof. The nail pattern blew my mind and is on every shingle I lifted. I checked several shingles on all slopes of the house.

I do need to document this better with more videos and photos….I’ll make that tomorrow’s project.

Definitely not right. QC is a real problem with companies running multiple crews that are new to them and no supervision. This example is another reason we do not run more crews than we can supervise. The only exception is the one crew that’s been working for us for years. If that was one of my jobs, it would all come off.
