I had it sodded at the beginning of May. The vast majority of the yard is thin and dead or dying. I also have an area that is experiencing root rot with ample amount of barn grass. Any ideas?

Take close up pictures. I’d lean towards heat stress over disease.

I’m with ronk this is almost def heat stress. You happened to sod before the hottest June on record (assuming you’re in south LA).

So, what do I do? Will it get healthier once the temps cool?

I had bermuda laid last month and this month. I have been watering the shite out of it and it has help establish the roots but the heat is still taking its toll. Just what it is at this point. As long as you get a good root system established it will survive. Just water and water some more for now.

Also try to water in the cooler parts of the day. Late afternoon, early morning, or both. You water in middle of day in this heat it dries up quick.

I typically water around 5:00 PM for 45 minutes 3 times a week or close to it.

I would definitely avoid watering SA in the evening due to fungus concerns but I get it if you don’t have irrigation.

Never water in the afternoon or at night. Last cycle should finish early in the morning.

I don't have a sprinkler system. I water when I can.

Get a $25 timer and hook your sprinkler to it.

I can do that. Didn't that existed. Back to my yard. Will it come back once the weather cools?

Like the previous posts say, this looks like too little watering, or watering at the wrong time of day.

If you don't want to leave portable sprinklers laying around the yard, you can buy compact sprinklers on a spike that can be daisy-chained together and attached to that timer.

ETA: we had similar yellow patches in our yard caused by some built-in sprinklers that went bad. Once we resumed watering those patches they turned green within a week or so.

Hard to really tell what’s going on with the picture distance/quality, but yes it looks like your lawn will bounce back with proper irrigation and mowing.
