My friend who is building a house bought a diy elevator from China

No surprise he's a friend of mine.
This started out with him getting 3 50k+ local quotes and finding out the are all sourcing the equipment from China too.
They're building it to his specs and he's working with his electrician to make sure it's all correct, they added cool LEDs for each the 3 landing doors and all kinds of pimped stuff.
It's only getting as far as the port of Charleston SC so he's going to drive there and bring it back.
I can't even fathom tackling something like this even with an extra set of hands so I'll keep the board posted as this progresses.
The kicker? Elevator cost $5k shipped to the US and the same model quoted to him plus a ton of upgrades.

I can’t wait to see this thing

Who is going to install it? Then, who is going to service it?
Elevator subs are prima donnas, so I hope it works out.

A DIY installation needs to be filmed, because it will need to be submitted to Ozzyman's Destination F'ed

I think id feel better with a winch from harbor freight and a home made carriage with a rope and a Blake's hitch and 27 beers on a saturday to put it all together.

I am curious to hear how his insurance company is taking this news.

There is a ton of people that die on exterior Camp lifts that fail. You just have to Google it. But China does it right.

Cable driven or hadraulic?

At least hydraulic it would just go down real fast but not bad enough to hurt. You. Well hurt you bad. I can't imagine a three-stage left and somebody put a pit in at their Camp or home. Bless you. Got to run all the power and the hydraulic lines to the pump. No one likes stairs.

I would do it myself as well but I've designed a lot of elevator shafts. As for maintenance I would just make sure my shaft is oversized so I could access the lifting components on each floor.

i know there's a massive battery backup and a hydraulic pump included.
i need to put some of the videos online. they're hysterical. let me find one of the ones they sent him.

Just rig up a catapult system that will throw him through an upstairs window. Probably about as safe as an online Chinese elevator.

Not a bad idea but I would assume he's installing a generator that would keep it operational.

Makes sense. You need less overhead clearance with a hydraulic system and you still end up with about the same volume of space below the first level.

quote:yes, a whole home generator but maybe its a safety thing because it comes with the elevator regardless.
