New home has zoysia, it is thick thick in front and a little clumpy but greener in the back. Back gets evening shade.

My question is mow height. The previous owner did a good job, but he did mow it at like 4.5 inches. As I mentioned, it is thick...like lose a baseball in it thick. It is also a little browner in overall appearance. Still beautiful though.

What height should I mow it? I have moved it down to 4 and it took a while. Would probably like to get it to 3 or so, is that possible.

What are the recs of board folks?

With a rotary mower, 2-3 inches

With a reel mower, 1-2 inches

Depends on the type of Zoysia. Pallisade zoysia looks great at 3-4" and if fertilized well holds a deep green color and almost looks like thick artificial turf.

4.5 inches isn’t a mow height, it’s damn near neglect. Unless you know the variety keep it at 2 inches. Gradually adjust the height though.

I've got Palisades and keep it at 3 inches. It's a lot more tolerant than my Bermuda at cutting a lot off if it takes me a minute to get to it.

I don't think I could get it down to 2 though

I’ve done some looking around and can’t tell what type of zoysia. I wish I knew. What is most common in La?

Then play it safe with 2".

Rotary mower around 2".

4" is way too tall and most varieties will have thatch build up issues.

Reels down to 1" are ideal, but that requires some time to mow multiple times a week

Our setting on the ZTR is 2.5 for our zoysia.
Not sure what actual height that is.

Keep mine at 3/4”. Hurricane got me all fricked up trying to keep it maintained like I need. I’ll get it back in the next couple weeks. I think zoysia look best in October than any month.

Cut it as low as you possibly can, it's going to get thatchy. I cut my with a greensmower at 0.5"

Can I overseed bermuda with Zorsia? Up here in NW Arkansas I have three grass choices. They are bermuda (which I have now), Fescue and Zorsia. I am not a big fan of bermuda, but I don't like Fescue either.

I would imagine either palisades or el Toro zoysia. If it stripes up insanely well it could be cavalier. We mow our zoysia grass at 1.75 inches with rotary mowers. Zoysia loves really sharp mower blades and don’t be scared to beat it up in the summer.

Does Zoysia take any extra care compared to bermuda?

One reason I stayed away from zoysia I thought it had to be mowed tall. Our little Yorkie can not walk in 3" tall thick grass. If I can mow it 1" or 1 1/2" it will work.

Thanks for all the responses, going to take some damn work to get it down to 2.5 or so , lots and lots and lots of raking.

I am committed to it though, going to start at first green this next season.
