Yea, I was looking at the soil in the pot it came in and its not as sandy as the soil my flamethrower came in. I honestly think my flame thrower was in a Gary type soil. Very sandy.
I will do some research on the lipstick soil. I understand what you are saying. I do a lot of watering but daily gets touchy when Im very busy with my two jobs..... Thanks again. Will send pics of the flame thrower in a few days when it totally opens. I dont think it will take long

AI gave me this soil mixture for a lipstick. I would say that sounds about right.

Seems pretty close, but I just straight up don't believe in compost in the mix. And it says compost or sandy loam. Those two things couldn't be more different. I would make Gary's with 40-50% peat and be done with it.

Even if I never get a fruit off of mine I'll be happy with it. They're beautiful trees. How short are you going to keep it? I'm trying to decide if I want to keep mine pruned for fruiting or just let it go for looks. I've let a plum and peach tree get too tall already but I think they look better like that.

I'm keeping it short enough to spray, so about 8 feet. They really are gorgeous trees. If they were evergreen too they would check every box.

Holy smokes I just found an incredible resource for mango information. This link takes you to a PDF from Tropical Acres with every single variety they grow (300+) showing the flavor group and origin. You can then click each one to go to it's description page. For example, you could find every single coconut flavored mango they grow and examine each to see which you might consider growing. Wish I had this years ago.

Thank you. I have been slowly pushing it into the sun every week a little bit more. It seems to be handling the direct sun through my pool screen pretty well. I've not seen anything out of the ordinary. Of course I have no idea what the hell I'm doing, but I take instruction pretty well. I honestly think this thing will be completely open tomorrow and it is absolutely going to be red.
Will be interesting to see how long the red color last. This is what it looks like this morning. It opened up a lot overnight.

Flamethrowers don't even look real. It's like some kind of art sculpture or a fantasy illustration. Can't wait for mine get to that size. The fronds will only get more red too.

Yea, very cool tree. Thank you for turning me on to it. I feel way more comfortable than I am with the lipstick. It seems to take watering well. Ive read that they dont like too much water but I am a over-waterer and Ive never had it not like water. Now that I have the Gary mix in there, I should not have any issues with over watering.
I really need to move that thing somewhere else on my pool area. I want to put a small garden fish pond that Im gonna make right where it is and I want to put my lipstick right there. Mostly shade all day with just a tad of sun.
I am nervous about leaving it out in partial sun (which I can find on my patio) for good. Ive done it a few days in a row with now issues but the guys on the facebook groun have me scared to death to let the sun hit it

Yes Gary's makes it almost impossible to overwater. The sun thing on flamethrowers is really mostly for small trees. Yours has enough size that it could take some sun. They grow in elevated forests in New Caledonia where it is consistently humid and moist so it's really about not letting them dry out in the direct sun. I'd start with 3-4 hours per day and watch closely. Remember that July sun is going to hit different than April sun, even in zones 9-10.

Update on my Black Austurkey Mulberry cuttings.
Ordered 5 cuttings. Got about a dozen. Half of which seem viable assuming I didn’t kill them during potting up. These went into the potting media during late February. Shown in 3 gallon pots.

Nice.. He actually recommended the ones I planted here.
Some varieties are quite bland. Others have textural issues some find offensive; but, once you have a good one you’ll want one in your garden. I’m sure of it.
There’s definitely an uptick in interest in mulberries here in FL. The weather is hospitable and there’s a number of varieties available in the mulberry growing groups. Some of which were developed here. Once these plants are more established I’m going to try and horse trade for some others like Tice, Pakistani and Worlds Best.
Just when I thought I was done planting mangoes my guy with the giant trees discovered a Little Gem hiding in the recesses of his backyard. Will be planting it this weekend. Then I’m done; I mean it this time. LOL
