I built a pvc frame also initially but realized that every cold event for us brings fierce north winds. The pvc doesn’t stand a chance..I ended up getting some electric Emt conduit and used these Corner and built a strong and sturdy frame.
Top it with some quality greenhouse plastic and no longer worry with wind.
Also use these clips to hold it to the frame

Yes, conduit works great. Slice a tennis ball and put it on top.

Has anyone grown Chilean Guava or Barbados Cherry? Looks like the Chilean Guava may even be able to go in the ground here.

Have not done either, but if you want an in ground guava that won't take significant protection you have to look at lemon (yellow) cattley guava. It's slightly more hardy than a Washington navel orange. If you have navel oranges around you, you can put this in the ground. Same protection protocol: does not need covering above 22F. It will grow in literally any soil on earth. Soggy, dry, rocks, alkaline, it does not care. I've got a huge one in a 20g pot and a 6 foot one in the ground. Insanely productive tree.

PSA: if you are in LA zone 9a, the weather forecasts for tonight are wrong. They've been wrong all week, but tonight will be the worst.
My forecast calls for a low of 30F, a light freeze, where I would typically only cover a few things. But it is 35F right now on the exposed north side of my house. That's 12 degrees colder than it was last night at this time. Last night we hit a final low of 27F. Also, no wind and clear skies. This has all the makings of an unexpected hard freeze of 24-25F.
If there was anything you were iffy about tonight, this is your chance to protect it. I'm going out to cover more and run extension cords once I get the kids to bed.
ETA: Actual recorded low was 26.4F.

Cold AF down here in zone 10 in Florida too. 38deg with wind. I have ice on my truck bed.
I have been just holding off on getting the Flame Thrower. Its just been too cold and I dont want to get one and have it stressed out for weeks when I first get it.
They have some big ones (10 gallons) that are 6-7 feet tall and look good and they havce some 10 gallons ones that are smaller (4 feet). Since I am going to have this in a pot around my pool and keep it there for a while, I think I am going to get a smaller one and just enjoy growing it.
They also have the lipstik palms and they are $500.
Here is a pic of one that they have inside thats fairly big. Not a great pIc but you can see it. They have all those exotic small palms in a green house so they can keep them from dying in our recent cold and keep the sun off them

Still a bit early to assess the damage here. Two nights of near freezing temperatures combined with high winds definitely did a number on the mango trees. A few are showing signs of burn on the leaves and many of the panicles were stripped of their flowers and/or broken. Fortunate to be close enough to the coastline that the ocean breezes kept us from having frost. Definitely fared better than some of the more interior and northern parts of the State. Lots of mango trees got wrecked based on the images I’m seeing out of the Orlando area.

Yep. This is why you just can't trust the forecast at this time of year. For those of you who want to see actual measured temperatures near you, check out the wundermap link below. This collates data from personal weather stations and allows you to see exact microclimates in your area.

Wiltz, glad yours wasn't a total nuking. Should get rebloom too. When I retire to Florida I'm going to Homestead. Not putting up with this freeze protection shite ever again.
This is the time of year where I get tired of it all. First freeze was in early November and now I'm looking at an arctic blast coming on 1/28. This is going to end up being a 4 month winter. Last year was 2 months. The first 1-2 times it's a fun challenge and somewhat satisfying. The 8th time it's just a pain in the arse and makes you question why you are even doing this.
Lanier, that is a good looking macrocarpa. I agree on waiting out the cold. Mine is small too. Will give years and years of container growth. Here it is in a 10gal. This is the hookerii variant or blonde flamethrower.

Have any of your new growth on that little guy turned red at all? I did a good bit of reading on it. Looks like I am going to have to be patient if I get a small one before I see any flame. LOL..
As soon as it gets stable here,, I am going to have a big weekend of planting in my yards. Just need some stability before I pull the trigger.
I am moving two , 7-8 foot christmas palms from pots to my back yard along my pool fence.
I am buying two small bottle palms to put with them. 15 gallon size
I have two Sago Palms that I will transplant in the back yard from pots. Not even exactly sure where yet but out of the sun. I had originally planned for them in the front but too much direct sun up there.
I am buying 10 new hibiscus bushes and replacing the ones in my yard. I just cant heal these things and I am tired of trying. LOL
I am buying a 25 gallon triple Alexander palm and putting it right in the middle of my front flower bed in front of my house. I created the space, just need the weather to get right.
Then I will have a bunch of empty posts inside my pool cage to find some new stuff to pot in them. One will get the Flame thrower, but no plans yet for the others ones.

Man, that's an ambitious project. My back hurts from reading it. Can't wait to see the finished product, lots of great species in there.
Nah, no true red fronds yet and I wouldn't expect them this young. Sometimes the spear will have a red tinge that fades before it opens up. From what I have seen, they initially start throwing reddish brown fronds at first and don't get the brilliant red ones until 3-4 feet tall. It's the perfect palm for your pool cage. High humidity, reduced wind, filtered light, and shockingly cold hardy. Just keep it moist (not wet) and no direct sun unless you methodically harden it off in tiny increments.
My lipstick palm on the other hand is like the most difficult palm I could have possibly selected.
The only advantage is that it is container friendly and slow growing.

It helps that you know what you are doing and you can control its environment with your green house and temperature control. I may try one later but not right now. I will focus on keeping the flame thrower alive.

South LA - four to five days of extremely cold weather incoming later this week. Get your plan ready now!

I’m strongly considering breaking out the grow lights and not even bringing my pots out of the garage.

Once you get beyond 2-3 large pots, I find it to be less hassle to just have a winter-long setup. My 2 greenhouses go up on my back patio when the first freeze is predicted or when temps get into the 30s consistently at night. They are automatically heated and lighted. Have to vent manually.

I have the same reinforced popup greenhouse as you except mine is 10-12 (first year they have offered that size in reinforced I believe). I had to upgrade to a larger heater to keep up with the additional size.
I do have a question for you though. How long will a propane tank last with one of the single heating units on it?
For people shopping around, popup ice fishing huts might be an option for temp cover. I have one of these I throw over my raised bed garden if we get a late cold spell. Last year I used it as temp housing for a few of my trees before I ordered the greenhouse. Ekimo Ice Shelters
