Anybody else have pineapple guava (feijoa) blooming?

I was really hoping this was the year, but still nothing. I’m guessing mine are just seedlings that will take a while.
Looks like Guava is getting ready

I also just noticed this on my pomegranate. This is the Salvatski variety.

Lol, boy have I been through that. Hear me when I say this: just wait. Wait and wait and wait. Probably wait until late summer. Citrus, despite having extremely resilient roots, love to act like they are dying after container to ground or ground to container transplants. I have had them drop every single leaf and stress bloom before turning into green twigs. Then, months later, they shoot out new leaves like nothing ever happened. In fact, they almost always recover the very second that I give up and spend money on a replacement. That's why I have two meiwa kumquats and two cara cara oranges. Don't believe their bullshite. It's fake news.

lol. I figure as long as they scratch green and I don’t need the pots I’ll let them ride. I’m almost tempted to put them in the ground in a spot where my Satsumas seem to be thriving, but I don’t know if I want to deal with the protection again with the way winters have been going.
My pawpaws haven’t leafed out yet either and still scratch green.

I also have a navel orange and a Meyer lemon that haven’t done anything yet. They had been struggling in the ground so I put them in pots this fall to make it easier to protect. They dropped most of their leaves, but still no signs of life yet.
Here’s a different angle. There’s on branch at about 16” and a couple more forming about 24”. I can always top there. This is a generic ‘pink’ from Home Depot.

Need some pruning advice. My guava is getting a bit too tall. I was thinking of topping the central leader as shown. Any issues with doing that?

How big will barbados Cherry get here? I need to get it out of the bark soil and just wondering how big of a pot to use.

that’s the same one I bought. stuck it in the ground yesterday

I think I’m going to go with a pot. One less thing to cover. I can just wheel it in.
Just found a sad little Barbados Cherry at Lowe’s and got it for $8. Need to wash off the waterlogged soil and get it in some shade for a bit to recover.

PS. What is everyone using for image hosting these days?
Another cold snap in the forecast. Forecasted low of 33 in Ascension. Hoping that holds or comes up some.
Looking good! I’m very excited for spring. Looks like I may have saved a couple of loquat fruits so fingers crossed!

If left to their own devices she says it’s gonna be 12-15 feet tall in 2-3 years.

I’ve had a couple get that tall in a single growing season! (started as about 3ft bare roots). They did take really well to a hard prune though. Unfortunately one just up and died this year and the other one still hasn’t fruited. Hopefully this is the year.

I have a friend in New Orleans who has a 15 foot starfruit tree in his yard. But it froze back years ago and killed the graft so it only produces sour fruit from the root stock.

Do you know if they protected at all? Seems like keeping one pruned and protecting similar to citrus could work. I may end up giving it a try since I enjoy the flavor of star fruit.

Jaboticaba was mentioned in that video as well. What’s your experience with its cold tolerance?

I realize none of these are tropical, but definitely tropical adjacent.

Maybe it’s time to start a sister thread for ‘Louisiana Temperate Fruit Gardening’

If I get some free time maybe I’ll get it going. I’m not the best reference as my method of fruit gardening leans more towards permaculture and survival of the fittest, but it would be good to share experiences in this climate.
Very interesting report from Florida.
Looks like star fruit could be a good candidate to zone push in ground. I know Chapple farms is growing them with protection.

I’m strongly considering breaking out the grow lights and not even bringing my pots out of the garage.
Has anyone grown Chilean Guava or Barbados Cherry? Looks like the Chilean Guava may even be able to go in the ground here.
How long can something like a guava last indoors without some supplemental light (no big windows in the garage)? There’s at least a week with lots of mid 30’s coming up and I’d rather just leave it picked up. Wondering if I need to break out the led lights.
