Another cold snap in the forecast. Forecasted low of 33 in Ascension. Hoping that holds or comes up some.
Looking good! I’m very excited for spring. Looks like I may have saved a couple of loquat fruits so fingers crossed!

If left to their own devices she says it’s gonna be 12-15 feet tall in 2-3 years.

I’ve had a couple get that tall in a single growing season! (started as about 3ft bare roots). They did take really well to a hard prune though. Unfortunately one just up and died this year and the other one still hasn’t fruited. Hopefully this is the year.

I have a friend in New Orleans who has a 15 foot starfruit tree in his yard. But it froze back years ago and killed the graft so it only produces sour fruit from the root stock.

Do you know if they protected at all? Seems like keeping one pruned and protecting similar to citrus could work. I may end up giving it a try since I enjoy the flavor of star fruit.

Jaboticaba was mentioned in that video as well. What’s your experience with its cold tolerance?

I realize none of these are tropical, but definitely tropical adjacent.

Maybe it’s time to start a sister thread for ‘Louisiana Temperate Fruit Gardening’

If I get some free time maybe I’ll get it going. I’m not the best reference as my method of fruit gardening leans more towards permaculture and survival of the fittest, but it would be good to share experiences in this climate.
Very interesting report from Florida.
Looks like star fruit could be a good candidate to zone push in ground. I know Chapple farms is growing them with protection.

I’m strongly considering breaking out the grow lights and not even bringing my pots out of the garage.
Has anyone grown Chilean Guava or Barbados Cherry? Looks like the Chilean Guava may even be able to go in the ground here.
How long can something like a guava last indoors without some supplemental light (no big windows in the garage)? There’s at least a week with lots of mid 30’s coming up and I’d rather just leave it picked up. Wondering if I need to break out the led lights.
Thanks for the reminder. Need to pick up the Guava. Think I’ll leave the citrus out until tomorrow (kumquat and Meyer lemon in pots). Predicted low here tonight is 32.
It’s basically a landscape bed currently, it just doesn’t quite drain well enough for these types of trees. I’m thinking of broadforking the area and basically building some slight mounds at each tree to help the drainage. I could do irrigation, but it would likely only be during dry spells.
So we’ve talked quite a bit about soil mix for containers, what about amending/building up for in-ground? I have 2 pomegranates and an olive coming that I don’t want to put directly in the clay. I was thinking about making a semi raised bed to keep them free draining. Should I stick with the same sand/perlite/peat mix in this scenario?
Looks like my loquat flowers survived. Just have to get through Jan/Feb now.
My loquat finally bloomed this year. It’s too big to fully cover so I threw a frost blanket over the top and stuck a wheel barrow of water underneath. Before bed I brought out 4 5gal buckets of hot water and put around the base. There was no ice in the buckets, so fingers crossed I was able to save the flowers.

The combo of goldenrod and the purple iron weed is stunning this time of year. I always encourage its growth outside of garden beds.

Do you season them? I haven’t tried okra in the freeze dryer yet.

Planted a Spice Zee nectaplum from Zaiger Hybrids. This is a peach/nectarine/plum cross with purple spring foliage and allegedly incredible fruit. Stone fruit in LA is always dicey, especially south LA, but this one is on Citation root stock and planted high on a mound that is 1/3 sand. I have automatic irrigation and am hoping I can keep this one root healthy. I foresee a lot of systemic insecticides, systemic fungicides, and bird nets. But at least the cold can't kill it. 200-300 chill hours.

I have one of these (at least I think it’s this variety) from Dave Wilson nursery via Chapple farms. The foliage was absolutely stunning when it first leafed out. I just did the summer prune a couple of weeks ago and it already has new growth.

They were anywhere from 250-350 behind home plate and dugouts and $100 in the outfields

This is more in line with what I was thinking. Hopefully prices will trend down over the next couple of days.
Is GA the same as standing room only?

Championship Series Ticket Prices

Does anyone know what range the tickets for championship series usually settle at? A lot of the cheapest Saturday tickets are currently sitting between $250-300 and I’m wondering if that’s going to drop much by Friday.
