Should see color break sometime in October but they are getting very little sun now. Will cut the rack as soon as the first one breaks yellow and ripen in a protected spot.

Well, look at that. Turns out we're not insane. The last 6 years have moved many of us in south Louisiana back to zone 8b. If this continues we will have to be rezoned.

this lines up with the most recent several winters featuring the plunge of the jet stream down thru the eastern plains and MS river valley into Texas and the lower gulf coast and the corresponding arctic air behind it

cyclical most likely but that behavior of the jet stream is being caused by something, most climatologists believe it’s due to variability in arctic temperatures and wind speeds…aka the polar vortex

I don’t hate it…a winter freeze brings a lot of positive outcomes except for tropical plants LOL

RA'd for

I would just like few of those "warm" winters we used to get where a few bananas survive and your hardy palms don't get zapped. Maybe every 3 years or so. Sub 20F since 2020 is really harshing my mellow.

Okay, small update. Added another mandarin to the group. My kids love citrus. So I now have what I think to be 3 premium mandarin. Newest cultivar added is a Shiranui (dekopon, Sumo orange).
This was bare rooted and potted straight into Gary mix 19 gal planter. I know citrus don’t like bare rooting, but the soil was just TRASH, so it had to be done. (Saxon Becnel tree)

Now I will say four winds growers ships nice trees, In decent soil (bark, pumice, peat) and a good tree pot for those wondering.

Other varieties I have are golden nugget- potted and Owari satsuma mandarin in ground-plan to graft other varieties onto it.

In ground - Cara Cara Orange, Rio Red grapefruit, Persian lime
Potted Lemon- rooted cutting
That’s enough citrus lol. All bases covered.

Lil Gem mango trying to photobomb

Final result- growing this tree a bit different, going to try more of a central leader with proper scaffold placement radiating out, using a stake and wire to train it for now. My other citrus I’ve done more open center style with layers. Just playing around after reading some University of Florida advice.

Myth actually. Citrus don't like bare rooting and then being put back into garbage soil. Citrus have a very tough fibrous root system that can take a lot of abuse.

Love it. It seems unphased currently. Doing a week of shade then back into the fray!

3 new figs and a new grafted guava. Figs are white Madeira #1 and Cavaliere. The guava is Chinese Carmine. Probably my last guava in my collection. Very sweet with a creamy white flesh and skin that turns red in hot weather.

Also found this super handy annona chart for anyone interested in them:

Took the parafilm off the new carmine guava. Parafilm does not dissolve like buddy tape over time and needs to be removed when the graft is healed. This is an excellent guava graft and wayyyy beyond my abilities.

Qinmi #9 yellow passionfruit is about to bloom for the first time.

At least one of my mango grafts took and is pushing.

Good example of just how small dwarf namwah is. That pup is 12 months younger than the main stem.

That COTRG looks great. I cut mine back to make it bushier like yours.

Yes that lemon guava is about to bloom. Won't have time to ripen fruit before winter but it will be cool to see!
