I’m within 1/4 mile from the interstate and looking to plant trees or shrubs to block some of the road noise so I can enjoy back patio. Probably need something that will get at least 12’ tall. Any suggestions? Roughly 80 linear feet across back of lot.

Sweet viburnum
Oleander, if you’ve got lots of room
Savannah or Burford holly
A board fence plus hedge will stop more sound

Opportunity to install a solid wall fence? I would also look for something that creates white noise like a fountain/water feature.

You're not going to get much sound deadening from plants unless you've got a very, very large area so you have over 100' depth to plant. A tall wood fence would be better but is still not going to do a whole lot as sound move not only horizontally towards you but also up and I over you. A fountain to create white noise is a better option

Cedar trees have been proven to dampen noise the most. But you may have mayhaw farmers knocking on your door. I'd go with the tallest tight fit cedar fence you can afford and as close to the area you are attempting to stay in as possible. If you get your neighbors together you may can establish the idea of the highway department building a sound barrier.

What you want is a tall fountain. Amazing how much road noise it hides.

This is something I’d be interested in doing. There are several subdivisions close by and adjacent to the interstate and would likely have a lot of local support. This is Prairieville area just south of Baton Rouge. Does anyone know where to start, who to contact, what are the requisites for getting approved?

My point is it's still not much. I would like to see that research.

Sound waves are like water, and they will flow through and over any gaps in a fence that you have up unless it is solid and tall enough. As far as vegetation goes, a poster above was correct in that you will need a large amount of extremely dense growth to even make a dent in the noise.

Plant some running bamboo out there and plan to move when it starts getting closer to your house, because once you plant it (assuming it’s legal in your state), you won’t be able to stop it. Hahahaha

ETA: water feature is a good bet to give you white noise.
