Any recommendations for a mechanic who l works on 20+ year old cars / trucks? I’ve got an AC compressor that’s gone out, the handbrake / emergency brake has gone out and I’m pretty sure we have a diesel leak. Any older car lovers out there with experience?

AGCO Automotive Repair Service on Coursey Blvd in Baton Rouge. Fantastic service. They've been servicing my 19 year old vehicle for years.

It would help to know where you are located.

Maybe I don't know one of those. Are you looking for a mechanic that is "old school" or a mechanic that works on "old" (20+ isn't that old in my opinion) vehicles?

Any mechanic would love to work on 20+ year old vehicles because they are a whole lot simpler than modern day vehicles are.

Not necessarily.
Most 20+ year old vehicles are rolling shitpiles that every hack with a pair of pliers, a screwdriver, and more than 3 teeth in his head has butchered on trying to diagnose a problem they have no idea how to confront.
Then the owner wants to pay discount price for someone who knows what they are doing to fix their shitpile right, while undoing what everyone else has fricked up. It doesn't work that way.
The decent 20 year old vehicle is rare, and usually a one-owner with low miles that has been garage kept and well maintained.

They are few and far between.

AGCO does have a lot of work and if you're not in a hurry, they are definitely worth the wait. Also, when it's cooler, go to a local car show and ask around for shops with experience working on older cars. Some of guys are grumpy and aren't helpful, but you will find some folks with good info.

Should one just assume this may be in Baton Rouge, or Alexandria-----How about Shreveport or Mobile, Alabama.

Most would post a city, not some perceived landmark in a city.

C and R has always treated me right.
I have been bringing cars there for years.
I do most of my own wrenching. I know a good deal about cars. They have never over charged me and replaced anything I don’t need.

You're getting crushed but you're not wrong. Not sure I'd say "most" but many vehicles that are on their 3rd owner are cobbled together Scotchloks and Autozone parts. The car has seen one too many trips to the parts store to get the "codes read". Parts store likes to sell parts so they recommend replacing stuff. Might even be the right part. But usually people just start shotgunning chinese parts from the parts store until they fix it, ignore the CEL or have to take it somewhere. Problem is now they have taken off possibly good quality OEM parts and thrown them away and replaced them with junk. So there used to be one problem and now there's multiple. Don't get me started on the electrical clusterfuk from adding remote starts and shite.

But I'd still rather work on a 20yo well maintained (non-salted) vehicle than a 1 year old plastic ipad with wheels.

eta, to actually answer the OP, Agco if he doesn't mind a bit of wait and his car isn't too far modified from stock. You cannot go wrong.

Well said.
You have expounded on my general idea.
Just because the majority disagrees does not mean you are wrong. Most are woefully ignorant of what you and I are obviously well acquainted with. Upvote for you sir.
