Let’s talk about zero turn mowers.

My Craftsman riding mower finally met its end yesterday and I’ll probably be in the market to either buy a replacement riding mower or a zero turn. My house sits on 2 acres of land that has a lot of oak trees on it and they provide good shade during the summer, but they leave a mess whenever they drop leaves, I’m talking about a lot of leaves. I use the mower to cut up most of the leaves which helps out considerably. I’m still on the fence whether or not I want to fork out more money for a zero turn, but I have been looking around at Home Depot and Lowes and need some advice on a few I’m interested in.
Cub Cadet
Husqvarna
Ariens
An acquaintance of mine cut grass on the side for extra cash, he owns a Dixie chopper and he told me whatever I purchase to make sure it has a welded deck instead of a stamped deck. Welded decks seem to be more durable.

Probably all built in the same factory, FWIW. The models sent to the big box stores are usually outsourced for production
FWIW someone on the OB is trying to sell their dads 48" Scag

If you get a zero turn, get an eXmark.

2 acres? Get a high end residential straight from a dealer. Spend 5k or so, or better yet, buy a used one with a couple hundred hours if you know what to look for.

don't buy from the big box stores, buy from a local dealer, or buy used online.
there are shite piles of mowers on FB marketplace

Check out Bad Boy, great mowers and reasonably priced.

I've got about 6 acres and a lot of trees as well. I don't know where a good threshold is to switch to a commercial grade/series, but that's what I have. There's lots of options if you go hat route...but obviously it will cost more. If you plan on living there another 10-15 years or longer, it will be worth the extra money.

Welded deck is more durable. Don’t get stamped. Also don’t buy it from Lowe’s or Home Depot. Go to a tractor supply/dealership place. They are significantly more knowledgeable and can better help you choose your mower
I’ve got a John Deere z5 something or other. Love it

Why not be earth friendly and replace your grass with veggies bro

You should probably take this to the Outdoor Board or the Home and Garden Board.

I pretty much suck at farming, but I can grow weed. I don’t think the feds or STPSO would appreciate me growing weed.

I went through a couple zero turns from Lowes (troybilt and husqvarna) they each lasted a few years but as mentioned above the deck and spindles were the weak link. After replacing the deck and several spindles, bearings, pulleys etc. I finally got tired of working on the MTD made junk and bought a 52 inch commercial Gravely Zero Turn. I love it and in 3 years I have done no work on it other than changing oil and filters and keeping it clean. I use it on 4 acres with a good many trees and it has been wonderful.
That bitch will run 9 mph and cuts grass like butter.
what used to take me 3-4 hours of mowing I can now do in about 1.5 hours and have a better looking yard.
Unless something has changed all of the big box store mowers are made by MTD and are pretty much good for a year or two then the decks blow up lol.

Gravely makes a tweener model that has the commercial deck, motor and hydraulics but the rest of it is residential. I'm on year 5 no issues. 48" with I think 24 hp Kawasaki. 2 acre yard plus son uses it to mow a few neighbors yards. Think I paid $4.5K

I'm on year 5 of my cub cadet. Haven't even changed the oil, just added some once since i don't feel like siphoning the damn crap out to change it.
Only issue i had was i had to replace a blade, and that's b/c i'm an idiot and tried cutting along an angled thin strip of grass between two driveways that had a huge cypress root on it and bent the blade.

I work at a JD Dealership. I would recommend not buying from Lowe's or HD. I would always find a local dealer that can support the mower.
The pressed vs. welded deck is overplayed. You are not cutting commercially so you should not have a bunch of deck problems. If you buy a $3000 zero turn you are getting a 10-13 gauge deck and it is not going to matter whether it is welded or pressed.
JD makes good mowers in the $3000-$5000 price range that would be perfect for what you are doing. Need to always think about who is going to be there when you need parts/service.
