I went ahead and put out pre emergent today based on my soil temp and this rain coming. I’m gonna put more out in a couple months. I think you need to time a second application of pre emergent after u aerate.

For most lawns I would do two spring pre em's. You can do one now and one 6 weeks from now. That you way you know you are covered. I would suggest aerating in the spring and not the summer. Aeration is stressful for the lawn and added stress of summer heat can mean a little longer to recover.

Ronk,

What should I expect to happen to over seeded rye when I spray a bermuda yard with prodiamine in February. I know you can't put it down before you seed, but will it kill the established rye thru root intake before the heat does?

Cons would be crabgrass pre emerge. Atrazine isn't going to give you much residual on crab and goose

I was thinking aerate in the early summer, late may early June when the grass is growing fast and there's plenty of rain.

It’s been mostly in the 40s here in Nashville. Thinking I need to wait until 50-60? I’ve got a bag of Barricade left from applying in October.

Should I buy something else? Dimension or prodiamine? What order would I want to apply?

It won’t hurt established rye. You will be fine.

Nashville is probably still a little chilly for summer pre em. You are more in the late February/March zone.

So don't do another winter? Should I stick with my Barricade or get Dimension/Prodiamine for the spring application?

My yard was a weedy mess starting from scratch last year so thinking 2 applications may be called for but hoping you had some advice as the Bermuda guy Ronk.

Just to add to the good information already provided in this thread, I contacted Dr. Ron Strahan, weed control extension specialist, LSU AgCenter, this morning and he recommends applying lawn pre-emergents for the Baton Rouge area in the first week of February. And of course with pre-emergents it’s better to err on applying them a little to early than a little to late.

Gonna try to put mine down in the next week or so in Baton Rouge. Should I be putting down deminsion or diamine?

I don’t think you’ll need another pre em for winter because the winter weeds are already up and growing. If you had a big problem with crabgrass last year I’d use prodiamine first and dimension second. Dimension is a pre and post emergent for crabgrass. Prodiamine goes down in about 3-4 weeks. Dimension goes down 4-6 weeks after. Dimension will kill young crabgrass and prevent new growth.

I have some weed-free zoneI plan on putting out on St. Aug. Should I put some atrizine as well or am I just doubling up and getting redundant.

Crawdude would be better to ask in this case. I don’t use weed free zone but I think he has a fill chart for weed free zone and atrazine.

Both are good, you may find Prodiamine cheaper, particularly if you use the spray version vs granular. If by chance you have/had a significant crabgrass problem Dimension does have post-emergent activity on young crabgrass seedlings if crabgrass seeds have begun to germinate (soil temp of 55) or you are delayed in your application.

I'm in SC so different, but fairly similar climates, and NCST has also been pushing for earlier spring applications the past few years.

I'll spray maybe 200 lawns and ill start next week and be done by the end of February, where I used to not start until March.

I would use the Atrazine if you have it.

Adding some Prodiamine to your program would be great. Either add it in with this spraying or go back in a month with it

The weed free zone + atrazine mixture is a recommendation by the LSU AgCenter for homeowners, and the combination of the 2 herbicides has a synergistic effect on weeds, making it more effective than either herbicide when used alone, but that said both weed free zone (trimec herbicide with carfentrazone added) and atrazine when used alone are very effective on numerous lawn weeds.

Here is the formula for mixing the 2 in combination

First time homeowner since July and located in South Alabama (Baldwin Co.). Lawn was pretty healthy when we took over, but major issues with lespedeza and some crabgrass in spots. I put down Prodamine in late-September. Seems to have down pretty good, and I’ve only noticed random plantain stuff in spots (which I’ve just pulled out). Been following this board (lurking) and I just picked up some Hi-Yield dimension for next application. A few questions:

1. When are you other South Alabama guys putting down this round of pre-emerge? Should I go ahead and do it now since it’s already on-hand and temps hitting 70+? Or wait another week and apply in Feb?

2. Should I go back to the Prodamine for round 3 in mid-March? Or go with something else?

3. Anything extra I can put down now to ensure that god awful lespedeza doesn’t show back up?! Or will these rounds of Prodamine and Dimension handle?

I’m in Spanish Fort. Put down my pre emergent Monday before this rain came through. I wouldn’t wait much longer.

I too am hoping for some lespedeza control. I pulled it last year while I was working from home but I won’t have that time this year. Hopefully my pre emergent schedule will help.
