Thermador column fridge/freezer

What are your thoughts on the column fridge/freezer? Trying to decide if we should go single door fridge up top/freezer on bottom or the column side by side fridge freezer. I’ve only ever had fridge up top freezer on bottom styles.

We went with mostly Signature Kitchen suite when we remodeled our kitchen after Ida. The wait wasn't quite as long as thermador's at the time. They are very high quality appliances. Dishwasher and drawer microwave work great. We have one wall oven and we have the 48" range with the built in sous vide which is awesome. We went with the frigidaire professional column fridge and freezer and have been happy with it as well. The combo was half the price of the signature model.

GE Monogram vs Thermador appliances

Not personal experience with the GE, but partners at work both have them and both had something go wrong, ie one a mother board and the other some type heating element/ resistor. Other than that they love them.

Thermador is not worth the price, burners are very light cast iron. If you're shopping in this price range, look at the JennAire for quality of build We purchased one in March of last year and it is solid, efficient and "HEAVY" with metal burner knobs, including the guts (all natural gas).

We have a Maytag Dishwasher going on 6 years now and it was a great buy at the time. Still running strong.

Fridge is a Samsung and running great for 8 years now (french Door style)

Microwave - We remodeled our kitchen in March and replaced the wall mount micro with a vented hood for the gas range. I converted our pantry to a walk in style "butler's pantry" and the counter top micro sits in there now. It used mainly to reheat the wifey's coffee and warm leftovers. We researched drawer style micro's but I opted for those budget dollars to go towards the gas range.

Sloopy.

Check out Blue Star for the range - USA built & about as commercial as you can get in the residential lines - very robust - I did this not long ago & went BlueStar over Thermador. Now I won't even consider another Range, Rangetop or Oven in the future.

can't speak on their refrigeration or freezer units.

https://www.bluestarcooking.com

They are one of the only residential brands that make a French door oven. GE & Viking are the only others I think.

I have a GE Cafe line fridge & dishwasher. Dishwasher is great, other than the control panel facing came off, which I replaced. It's VERY quiet & cleans the hell outta everything. No real complaints there.

The GE fridge is nice. Not as much freezer space as I would like but that is what I was working with from budget perspective. Ice maker clumps up as well. Wish that was designed better.

I don’t have a microwave and never have thought “man I wish I had a microwave right now”

useless appliance

i can crank out award winning chex mix in batches 6 minutes at a time and be done with 8 boxes of chex, packaged up in less than the time it takes to do one small batch in the oven.

i can microwave oil & flour and have a gorgeous dark roux in roughly 10 minutes that never ever EVER burns even if i'm doing 5 different things at the same time.

i can knock out a couple baked potatoes in the time it takes to grill my steaks.

i'm a fan of the frozen indian food from trader joes and while the samosas are cooking in the oven i can heat 2 chicken tiki masalas and 2 saag paneers that would take an hour to cook in an oven.

i'm not seeing the downside here. i also use my oven constantly and the air fryer for fries and leftovers.

its just another tool.

I prefer the column just because it’s a lot easier to access. IMO things have a tendency to get lost very easily in bottom pull out freezers. The column freezer is just as easy to keep organized as the fridge

I also looked at Bluestar ranges and range tops before going with Thermador. Ultimately decided thermador because of (a) the bundle deal and (b) the sealed top being significantly easier to clean than the open Bluestar top.

I’ll say that this thread is the first time I’ve ever seen an opinion shared that Thermador “isn’t worth the price,” and I’ve spent literally hundreds of hours researching and talking to appliance service providers. To the contrary, the consensus that I’ve come to understand is that Thermador is every bit as good, if not better, than similar brands that are more expensive. To each his own though.

I’m looking at going with either Thermador or Sub Zero/Wolf. Seems like you can’t really go wrong either way. Wonder if anyone here has had experience with both. Is it worth going with the dual fuel range or just gas?

But the point of cooking is temperature control and nothing beats induction.

That's a lie and a half.

Induction doesn’t require an always on pilot light.

Neither do the electronic igniters on my Dacor.

Gas can output more heat, period.

It’s easier to clean because the magnets don’t scald like fire does.

Most people know not to touch hot things.

Yes I did “have to” buy new cookware.

Must have had cheap cookware, that makes cooking on any heat source suck.

I found a new religion and it’s called induction cooking

Thermador

If looking at Thermador for a range, I suggest looking at it in person compared to other top of the line appliances. In my experience the cast iron was lighter and the knob components had ABS in the "guts". I opted for heavier cast an all metal knobs as a criteria I wouldn't waiver on given my experiences with ABS in high heat locations. JMHO.

if any of you baws get too stressed out about choosing between gas, electric, induction just close you eyes and think about your great grandmother having to start a fire every time she wanted to cook. Tuesdays, sundays, August, 2 weeks from yesterday, all of it. She would tell the preacher to go to hell for the opportunity to get her hands on a simple $15 hotplate from walmart.

Make an appointment with Kathy at Stanton’s if you are in BTR. She handles all my accounts. She’s been doing this for a long time. Set up an appointment, that way she can explain everything.
