Is There a Reliable Refrigerator?

Getting tired of buying junk refrigerators then constantly fixing and discarding them.
Didn't see much in a previous thread except "Samsung and LG suck".
We got rid of our new-ish GE Profile after constant service calls. The local service tech told us "all refrigerators suck but Whirlpool is easier to fix" so we bought one.
Within the first year we had multiple Whirlpool warranty service calls because of a crazy loud compressor.
Then the ice maker broke shortly after the 12-month warranty expired.
Whirlpool parts like ice makers and water control valves are cheap and easy to install but I'd expect more than a 12-month service life.
Is there a refrigerator that's as reliable as a Speed Queen washing machine?

This won’t help you, but my 1989 Amana that is in my wood shop is still going strong. Never a single repair. I’ve been through about 3 others in the house since 2000. I don’t think you will find anything as reliable as a fridge from the 1970s and 1980s. Why can’t they make them like this again? But prettier.

We have been conditioned to consume, dispose, repeat.

Do not buy a Samsung appliance….

I got this Whirlpool in 2018 and have had zero issues with it.
I really like the double ice makers and the ice maker in the fridge section being out of the way.
When I was buying, I looked up brands and the differences. In short, all brands are designed to fail around 10 years. Whirlpool has the tightest bell curve around that 10 year mark.

Now that you mention it, our dirt-cheap Frigidaire garage refrigerator - made for high exterior temperatures with no fancy controls or ice maker - has been 100% trouble-free.
Never gonna convince the wife to put that ugly Frigidaire workhorse in her kitchen.

Was just looking into this because our 14 year old Frigidaire started giving us some issues.
Per Reddit’s “buy it for life” subreddit, there are no good ones but Bosch is at the top, along with Frigidaire and GE ‘s “professional” lines.
I opted to just buy replacement parts for my Frigidaire. See if I can’t limp it along for another 3 to 5 years.
Edit: obviously the more basic the appliance the better - that’s why so many people have 20+ year old beer fridges. If you can live without a fancy icemaker built in then you’re better off.

Same here. Best Buy was having a sale years ago. Bought 2 side by sides. One stripped down Frigidaire for the shop and a Samsung with basic functions for the house. Samsung took a dump 2 years out of warranty. Frigidaire in the shop still making hay, so I bought one for the house. So far so good. The days of buying an appliance and not worrying about it for 20 years are long gone.

I've come to realize that anything that involves water and/or freezing is bound to break if it was made after the year 2000. Go with anything besides a Samsung appliance, only buy their TVs and phones that don't explode.
We have an LG wash tower that has been great for 2 years so far. Only front loader I've ever experienced that has never left a mildew smell or stain. I'm not keen on their refrigerators, but we have a microwave with them that also works well.
You are safe buying a Whirlpool/GE/Frigidaire appliance, while also realizing that the worst thing that might happen is you need to replace the ice maker. We had to replace our Whirlpool ice maker after almost 2 years and it wasn't that big a deal. I think the part was less than $60 and it was a plug and play.
I get it, machines shouldn't break shortly after their limited 12 month warranties, but there is no such thing as the perfect machine (unless you're a Speed Queen snob.) I would say just go with the brands I mentioned safe and maybe have to deal with a small problem that can be solved quickly a year or two down the road.
Other suggestion would be to get a refrigerator that does not deal with an ice maker or water dispense. I love my water dispense because it can pour for me in increments of 1/4 of a cup. Didn't know it had the function until I bought it and had it delivered but I love it.

So do you buy dirt-cheap, no-name aftermarket Chinese parts from Amazon with free shipping and easy returns?
Or pricier OEM parts from the manufacturer's website with no free returns - possibly made in the same Chinese factory?

The simpler the better, and I avoid icemakers like the plague.
We did some remodel work and moved the fridge we had out, around, back in, and back out....after all that it developed a freon leak and wouldn't cool. I replaced it with another simple refrigerator with no icemaker. The old one would still he kicking if not for all the moving.

OEM on eBay is the way to go IMO.

Have a 2005 Whirlpool top mount that runs perfect. Not very big but it hasn't missed a beat and the ice maker cranks out ice like crazy. I've always kept it clean inside and out and the the water is always filtered.

I'm still using the Whirlpool I bought in 06 after Katrina hit and I had to replace many appliances. I've only had to change out the ice maker once and the lights inside the fridge and freezer have recently gone out and need replacing. They are small LED units that pop in and out and I just have to order them.

All of the new models fail.....ice maker, door hinges, tray slots....
all plastic and not worth a crap! and $1500!
The last 2 I bought....both had class action lawsuits filed on them!
They look nice in the store, but they are garbage.

the OEM part from ebay was about the same price as the suggested aftermarket part on Amazon. i'd rather spend $60 five times over 10 years than buy a new $2,000 fridge

As a tech. I say. "All refrigerators suck but side by sides and top freezers suck less, especially whirlpool"
All fridges have too much tech.
I personally own a 27 year old sub zero.

I've loved my GE products I've bought over the last 2-3 years. Way better than the Frigidaire crap that was put in by dsld

From my friend at Stanton's:
None of them since they’ve changed the coolant.
I prefer Frigidaire at this time !
