Considering getting an iron gate and fence for my house in New Orleans because of all the car break ins and Amazon package thefts. Originally I was thinking a 6’ fence but now thinking it might be too jail like and considering a 4’ fence. What do y’all think aesthetically? And then is a 4’ fence enough to keep out the riff raff ?

Fencing and locks are for honest people.
I would go with the higher fence if safety is the concern over aesthetics. 4' is not going to keep anyone out.

6' fence won't keep them out, if they want what you have.

When you see the perps strolling down the streets in broad daylight with grass beach mats rolled up under their arm.... well, it's highly unlikely that the perp is going sunbathing in the media or on the hellstrip.

Spiked fence....meet grass mat.... meet perp getting over the fence. .

How will Amazon, FedEx, etc. get access? Throw the package over the fence?

you actually can't even leave the spikes open. fence companies have to put safety tips on them.

This was my question as well. A 4' fence will not keep anyone out from taking your packages (assuming the delivery person can get them behind the fence) and won't stop people from rummaging through your car. It may stop them from stealing the car itself.

You would need a 6-8' fence to keep you from being an easy target; although, it may not stop it all together.

But, now your packages will need to be left outside of your gated area, which puts them further from your door and makes them easier to steal.

I was thinking of leaving the gate unlocked during the day for package deliveries so that at least the perps would have to go in and out of my gate as opposed to just strolling up to my porch. Maybe that's just silly thinking by me.

Your thinking is correct. A high iron fence will be a deterrent IMO. You will not be as soft a target.
