It’s a very old home. Some of the walls are plaster with bricks behind them.

I need someone to hang a TV and a very large mirror.

I’ve tried on smaller objects and had trouble.

Recommendations?

Have you ever mounted a TV? Most tv mounts come with instructions on mounting into brick/cement. They will also sometimes come with an anchor for those as well. It's very simple DIY unless you really don't want to do it.

I did this. Redhead sleeve anchors.

If you are unsure of the substrate, I’d cut out a small section behind where the mirror tv will live just to be sure you know what you’re attaching too. I agree with masonry anchors as well.

All I can tell is there are no findable studs.

Yea. Little tricky. I can prob swing by this week and help you out. I’m in Nola. Post your email and I’ll coordinate. Been working in these older houses for 20+ years in Nola. Won’t take but 10 minutes.

Figured it out.

The plaster wall was so thick the stud finder didn’t work.

I got a Zircon finder with deep scan. It was still hit or miss (false positives) but I found three studs that worked.

Thanks for the tips.

More than likely that's because if your house is old, it has wood lath that is nailed to the studs running parallel to the floor and I don't know if any stud finder will differentiate between the lath and the actual stud.

That was exactly what it was.

The deep scan stud finder did the trick, but it wasn’t perfect.

It showed studs where there weren’t any.

It showed some studs as being about 5 inches wide.

I used a very small drill bit to test. Once I found two and knew the distance between them, finding the third was easy.

Plaster walls are a beeyotch!

I live in a near 100 year old house with plaster and lath walls, so I know the issues that are faced when hanging heavy things on walls.

I've also got 31 large double hung wood sash windows with the pulleys and counterweights that I've probably replaced most of the sash cords on over the 31 years I've been in this house.

Older houses have their charm, but also offer up some problems for the DIY types and it's a good thing I know what I'm doing when it comes to just about all things DIY.

Good on you for figuring it out.

I’ve got those windows, too. May hit you up for advice when it comes time to replace the cords!

They are pretty easy once you know how to access them.

Good guess, but it's actually Mid-City off Banks St.

I used to do some carpentry around Nola and some of those classic old homes close to Esplanade had a ton of those old wooden windows.

I had this in my house which had thin wood paneling nailed to it. It was terrible trying to hang a large TV until I cut a hole in the wall to figure out what was going on.
