With the summer upon us, my pool water temperature keeps climbing. It is no where near refreshing. I looked into the pool chillers but they are both expensive to purchase and expensive to run for a couple of months throughout the year. We don’t need a heater because we have a stand alone Jacuzzi. What are some suggestions? Does those fountains that connect to the jet nozzles really work? I know some people use ice in milk jugs but that seems to be a PITA…Any thoughts?

I run my pool exclusively at night unless it is needed to be on during the day during activity. You'll find that a pool will cool to the ambient temp, and with nighttime temps lower, your pool temp will be lower than the daytime temp. This tip was provided by the website Trouble Free Pools. Give it a try and see what happens.

ETA: My pool temp this morning was 84° and I live in S-LA, south of I-12.

I made 2 fountains that I connected to my pool returns and they consistently dropped the pool temp by 4 degrees.

Maybe some engineer here can pitch in, but I had a pretty sharp plant engineer tell me that they were able to dissipate more heat off of their cooling towers during the hottest parts of day, and he suggested that I run my pump (and fountains) during the hottest part of the day.

I use a large triangular sunshade over my pool coupled with a fountain attachment to one of my 4 jets. My pool is consistently 4-5 degrees cooler than my buddy who has a very similar pool/situation a few neighborhoods over.

There's a ton of variables, but it does seem to help a great deal. I'm a fan of the sunshade because there's almost always a shady spot in the pool. Nice when it's full 98F sun blazing.

I did this too. Then I changed my pump to run from midnight to sunup. Made a HUGE difference.

sunshade over my pool. The hardest part is getting attachment points. Luckily I have an outside office that allowed for an easy 3rd attachment spot.

Do you have fountains? Or just running the pump and skimmer?

So you don’t run the pumps during the day?

Heat pumps in reverse are what my neighbors use, but I’m like you and have an attached spa with a gas heater. Running waterfall at night or just pump in general helps. Aeration and evaporation help cool but will really raise your PH fast if alkalinity is even in the “normal” range or you have an older plaster pool. If fiberglass or especially epoxy lined, keep alkalinity low and use fountains all you want.

Our pool has been very cool this year, we switched around our pump schedule. We run our pool about 22hrs a day. We don’t run it mid afternoon. It’s staying low to mid 80’s and is refreshing. We haven’t run our water features yet other than we run our bubblers on our sundeck which we haven’t done in the past.

Just checked my iaqualink and my pool is 89 right now, which is not too bad. I run the pump from 7a-4p but with the high temp forecast in the coming days, I'm going to set it up to run at night to see if I can tell a difference. I'll run the waterfall as well.

No fountains, but a spa that waterfalls into pool.

SWG.

ETA: Keep in mind that sunlight is one of the biggest detriments to chlorine. "The ultraviolet rays of the sun can reduce chlorine by up to 90 percent in two hours! And if it's a hot day, warmer water tends to breed more bacteria, and so the pool's chlorine gets used up faster and must be replenished more frequently."

I've got a couple of PVC fountains that I connect to 2 of my jets. They work wonders, especially if you run overnight. Was out of town for almost 3 straight weeks, and got into a 93° pool on Monday evening. Immediately went and connected my 2 fountains/aerators and changed the pump to run from 9pm until 7am. Yesterday my pool was 87°.

The PVC does look a bit ghetto, but it gets the job done and cost me a whopping $60 or so for 2 of them.

The fountains help, but last year I just set my pump to turn off from 9am till 5pm. That seemed to keep it ok except for a few days, and it was hot last year. My simple theory is that the water being still limits the heat exchane for the lower layers fo water where the pump circulates the cooler water alont the top. I also run my deck fountains while the pump is on. I didnt use the little sprinkler things last year.

Or I maybe wrong and got lucky. The year prior I ran my pump in the day and and most nughts with the little pvc fountains attached and had 3-4 weeks in July that it was too hot to enjoy. The fountains did help, but only a few degrees. On those too hot days I would backwash my filter for like 20 minutes then run fresh water in and that helped a bit.

Just left pool store, my CYA was low, low. Added 4 lbs of stabilizer, that will help tremendously with my chlorine depletion that occurs for the next couple months. I also add a little shock on Sundays after the weekends if we were in it a bunch. After a bad incident of black mold two years ago, I am hypersensitive.

Overall it takes about 1/2 gallon of acid a week, a little liquid chlorine once a week and the stabilizer once or twice a year and I am done. Have had absolute crystal water for the three years of pool ownership.

Wish I woulda got a heater/chiller when I installed. This year it has been too cold to enjoy until recently and we are rapidly moving to hotter than I really like really quickly too.

Do it the redneck way and turn on your lawn sprinkler when you get in

We have a heater for our connecting spa. We will def replace it with a chiller/heater when it goes out.
