My kitchen was designed with a microwave shelf with the below dimensions.

I purchased a microwave with the following:

quote:

APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS (HxDxW)
• 14 in x 19 3/4 in x 24 1/8 in

im thinking this may have been a bit too big and i should have went with something smaller and a trim kit. thoughts? thinking I need to go smaller but not sure what to go with

it fits on the shelf for the feet bnut sticks out about 2"

Even though the feet fit on the shelf, I would worry that the microwave would tip over when someone, particularly a shorter someone, was trying to take something out. Just seems like a safety hazard.

Your microwave looks goofy in that hole. Like I’m talking super goofy. Sticking out from the cabinets with the sides exposed looks pretty doggone bad.

I agree. Not to be rude but I don’t know why anyone would design a kitchen like that , especially since it appears you are doing everything from scratch (new cabinets).

The microwave “nook” looks like a complete afterthought as it is (regardless of the size microwave you put in the nook).

I would seriously consider redesigning your cabinets with a built in microwave now before you get everything trimmed out.

Putting the microwave sitting on the counter top would look better than it sitting on that shelf sticking out.

Do you have cabinets above your range? I would install a microwave with hood capabilities above the range, take that shelf out and convert that space to regular cabinets. It looks like you are doing renovation, might as well do it right.

well i was told microwave range hoods were not the way shite was done any more. i have a gas range and hood. didnt want a built in to the island and am having a double oven so couldn't put it there. ill just bite the bullet and get a trim kit for the shelf and a microwave that fits.

It's not going to look as bad once the fridge is in there to the right...but I think it would look better with a smaller microwave and trim kit.

Just giving a better option than a microwave hanging halfway out a cabinet.

Not sure if this is possible but can an 18” deep cabinet be placed anywhere? We have an area with one 18” deep cabinet section in between two 12” deep cabinets, and a small microwave sits flush with the front in its 18” deep nook. No extra shelf is needed that sticks out (although it came with one, we removed it and opted for a smaller microwave).

Doing this may require you to buy more cabinets though so may not be worth it.

I don’t think a trim kit is going to fit because of that bottle shelf protruding. Are you going to cut it flush?

Agree, microwave hoods are complete trash. No one who cooks frequently should have one. A real hood, externally vented, with proper CFMs for the BTU output of the stove is the ticket.

I think the microwave sticks out a bit too far, but just buy a smaller one. I dislike the ultra fitted kitchen look and wouldn’t bother with a fitted trim kit around an inexpensive appliance that will likely last 5-6 years. I went round and round w my better half, who obsessed over a counter depth refrigerator. I was fine with the “regular” one that stuck out farther. It bugged him, so we ended up w counter depth.

This is one of my pet peeves about modern day McMansions.

That and the lack of built-in stove tops and ovens.

I had the EXACT same problem a month ago. Was redoing our kitchen and have the exact same space for a microwave, same measurements and look: square cutout right below cabinet. Our microwave was huge and looked stupid hanging out.

Went with a small one. It’s sleek and looks nice, but has to be the size of a dorm microwave. Turns out, it’s actually all we need. $80.

Cheaper for builder. Probably $1,000-$2,000 less in cabinets and another $1,500 less, or more in appliances.
