How do you get rid of a rat in the attic?

I’ve seen it, it’s a medium to large sized rat.
I’ve tried rat sized snap traps with peanut butter and strawberries. I have 5 of those up there, and he won’t bite. I’ve also tried 2 sticky pads but I think he’s too big for those. One got flipped over once but was never touched again.
I think the problem is that I can’t get back all the way to the edge of the attic to where I’ve seen him twice. I can see running lanes through the insulation all throughout the attic though so I know he ventures out.
Any suggestions?

Set traps baited with peanut butter. If you resort to using poison, chances are one will die in your attic or inside a wall and smell up your house for at least a couple weeks.
Once the traps are set, tie them off so if the rat is not killed immediately, they can't drag it off. I usually tie a piece of nylon twine around the little looped area where the arm for the trap is secured to the wood base and tie off to a wire or pipe in the attic.
I have a woodworking shop and see the occasional rat and set the traps baited with peanut butter. They will ignore it for a while, but eventually they will take the bait and be killed.

Tie, glue or screw a trap to a long piece of wood like a 1x4 and set it. Then push it back to the area where you are having trouble reaching being careful to not set the trap off doing so.

I’ve used the TomCat bait boxes with success.
Fair warning. He might die in your attic.

You need to figure out how he got in there. Where AC lines go into the house is a popular place for them to chew a hole. Look for small hole anywhere around the roof eaves. Rats frequently use trees to can access to roofs, but prefer to enter the house near ground level.

This.
You need to close off all points of entry. It is getting it's food and water from outside. Once it is contained in the attic, it will have to go after food on the trap.

Put a box full of snakes up there.

Make sure there is no water source inside your house (leaky pipe) then buy a bait that dehydrates them so they will go to the source of their water and die there. 50/50 shot of it dying inside. Buy scented candles just in case.

TREX trap. Make sure it’s up against something. Put peanut butter in the trap but also bait the box with poison. The poison and the peanut butter will attract him and he won’t be able to get to the poison. You don’t want him dying in your wall. You want the TREX trap to get him.
Get multiple boxes. If you have one, you have several.

In the future, if you keep up with your lawn maintenance, tell your neighbor to trim his bushes and get rid of his palm tree.
Also, bamboo is a big source. Make sure your neighbors don’t have that as well

Contrac Blox poison. I use it in all my rental properties and have never had a rat die inside. It makes them thirst so they go out looking for water.

I've had good luck baiting traps with a piece of kibble or a dog treat. After trying peanut butter with no luck, I tried the dog food and it worked like a charm.

They are easy to trap with peanut butter on a rat trap. I like using traps because you know when you got it.

But then the next step is a mongoose in the attic.

Big assed rat trap not a damned mouse trap.
Or a critter cage. As mentioned, bait all with peanut butter. Get a bucket of water. Dump cage in water.
